Big day for @PHNLab 🎉
The winner of this year Ardern-Lockett award was announced at @MEWE2021 and was awarded to @PerHNielsen. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to research and practice in the field of Microbial Ecology and Water Engineering.
Join us in Aalborg in May and learn how to use MiDAS5 and other #MiDAS resources to analyze microbes in wastewater treatment systems! 🦠🧬💻

Round of applause to @CaitySing for attaining the tenure-track assistant professor position! 🎉👏🏻 Well-deserved recognition for your contributions, you rock!
Yesterday, Vibeke Nielsen received her Master’s degree for her project “Microbial Communities and Settling Behaviour in Activated Sludge Plants” 🥳 We would like to thank our #MiDAS collaborators, who contributed to the project.
Important and abundant uncharacterised Chloroflexi populations in annamox, AS and reactors, and a new favourite in our lab @PerHNielsen? "Ca. Villigracilis nielsenii" 😀
Read all about the effects on the microbial community of a huge full-scale activated sludge transplant between wastewater treatment plants in a new paper by @GiuliaDottorini, @DorkaWagner and... https://t.co/x8rfsQJ9Kt
For the sediments it proved more complex due to high diversity, and especially for the marine sample there was high-strain complexity of cable bacteria, but Mantas was still able to obtain 2 HQ genomes (1 in 1 contig) by subsampling, re-assembly, and re-binning. Not easy.. 6/10
Genome recovery is highly dependent on species abundance and strain complexity. For the enrichment sample, we recovered 50+ (!!!) cicular metagenome-assembled genomes (cMAGs), including the Ca. Electronema aureum as expected. Easy peasy.. 5/10
Genomes in hand, Francesca did metabolic reconstruction. First, she looked if the prev incomplete genomes had missed genes, that explained the long-distance electron transfer. We didn't find the smoking gun, but with complete genomes, we are now certain that it hides within! 8/10
In a great collaboration with @CEMAarhus, we have used high-throughput @nanopore metagenomics to recover the first closed genomes of the enigmatic "Cable bacteria"! A thread, 1/10 https://t.co/Nl8zED7w1Q
You still have the chance to join the Inaugural Lecture of Distinguished Professor Mark van Loosdrecht and the launch of the REThiNk-project - Recovery of extracellular polymers from wastewater treatment residuals as a new circular biopolymer! Monday 31/10

Autumn has just started in Denmark and we people are slowly putting on our sweaters again, but how do #microbes feel about these changes and do they also have a favourite season?
You can read all about it at poster 241 or find Mariam for a talk
If you go to poster 188, you will find out how you can use machine learning to predict the dynamics in a microbial community!
Are you more interested in @midasguide or #ampvis in R? No problem! Kasper is also ready to discuss that!
Are you at IWA cph? Come have a chat about predicting microbial community dynamics using machine learning at poster 188. I'm also very involved in the MiDAS taxonomic databases and developer of the ampvis2 R pkg for community exploration #WorldWaterCongress#iwa#midasfieldguide
If you are interested in #foaming or #nutrientremoval in #wastewater, you can have a look at @zivilekon poster number 130.
You will also see her beautiful FISH images of Chloroflexota! 🐟
Super proud of @lamurias who have realized our vague idea of metagenome binning should be a "graph" problem. Looking forward to integrating new features and scalability to very (!) large long-read metagenome datasets. @VILLUMscience
You hear a lot about fecal transplantations these days, but what happens when you disturb a full scale wastewater treatment plant with a massive activated sludge transplantation?
Find @GiuliaDottorini at poster 391 to talk about it!
How does the sewages affect the diversity of the activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants?
Rodrigo has some very interesting theories on that!
Catch his poster pitch today at 15.18 in auditorium B or find him at his poster 143.
