From toxin to light-controlled tool: researchers in the #PHOTOTHERAPORT project have engineered “Azoveratridine”, a photoswitchable derivative of the neurotoxin veratridine that can be reversibly activated with light.
➡️ A new step forward for photopharmacology.
IBEC engineers a light-controlled version of the alkaloid neurotoxin veratridine by chemically installing an azobenzene photoswitch, enabling reversible photoactivation in neurons and cardiac tissue.

🌟 Light is more than illumination, it can become a therapeutic tool.
Through photobiomodulation and photopharmacology, we are exploring safer, more precise, and personalized medical solutions.
🧵 We are celebrating the #InternationalDayOfLight and the incredible potential of light to transform healthcare.
At the #PHOTOTHERAPORT Project, we’re developing innovative therapies that combine light-emitting implants and light-controlled drugs
⚡ By combining both technologies, we aim to create localized anti-inflammatory and neuroinhibitory treatments that could help reduce:
→ Chronic pain
→ Inflammation
→ Epileptic seizures
