It’s always a beautiful thing to see the up & coming youngsters meet up with the legends.
Last night, @canarsiembb senior @PJSINGLETON3 made his commitment to @GovsMBB, a program that has been a force in the South for years, especially when they were in the @OVCSports.
More than 50 years ago, there was another Brooklyn guy that made his name on the national scene at the same school.
James “Fly” Williams, a native of the Brownsville section of Brooklyn & also a famed New York City 🏀 legend, made a splash at the school in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Long before he was immortalized in the 1976 book, “Heaven is a Playground,” which was written by @ricktelander, “Fly” had two great seasons at the school from 1972-74, as he averaged 29.4 points & 7.6 rebounds per game as a freshman (1972-73) and as a sophomore, averaged 27.5 points & 10.9 rebounds per game (1973-74) and led the Governors to a first-round appearance in @MarchMadnessMBB & won conference Player of the Year honors. In those two seasons, he averaged 1,541 career points.
He then went on to play in the ABA, where he was the second pick in the 1974 draft to the St. Louis Spirits., with whom he only played one season & averaged 9.4 points per game. He also played in Israel & and made noise throughout every playground tournament in the city, even scoring 100 points in one game at the old IS 8 in 1978.
Now, over 50 years after he made his mark at Austin Peay, another young Brooklynite is ready to make his mark too.
🚨 Commitment Alert! 🚨
Blossoming guard PJ Singleton has committed to Austin Peay for the 26-27 season. The 6'6" Brooklyn native has a quick release and is dedicated to the game.
Best of luck in your senior high school season and beyond!
