It’s called the i-motif, and it's not a twisty spiral. It's a four-stranded knot where cytosine pairs with itself, not guanine. Though theorized in the '90s, it was just recently seen inside living cells by Australian researchers.

Why it matters:
• Found in areas that control genes and aging
