The Tariffs are not ON China.
The Tariffs are payable by American importers on Chinese products.
The US consumer then pays the extra costs.
The Chinese DON’T pay the tariffs.
It means importers must source elsewhere.

Tariffs don't increase the total money supply, so in that sense, they are not inflationary. But they will increase the domestic money supply, as fewer dollars flow out and fewer goods flow in. The result is more money chasing fewer goods. On the flip side, lower trade deficits result in foreigners having fewer dollars to invest in U.S. financial assets. That means U.S. stock and bond prices will go down.

In effect, tariffs will redirect years' worth of inflation from Wall Street to Main Street. Consumer prices and interest rates will rise, and asset prices will fall. A dollar crisis would have eventually forced a day of reckoning on its own. Tariffs will just accelerate the process.

My fear is that no one is prepared for this outcome and that neither Trump nor Congress will be able to stay the course. Democrats will blame Trump and Congress for an economic crisis that was destined to happen anyway due to decades of horrible Fed monetary policy and reckless fiscal policy on both sides of the aisle.
