Ryan Coogler won his first-ever Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for “Sinners.” Coogler is the second Black writer to win the award after Jordan Peele won for “Get Out” in 2018. “Sinners” broke the record for the most nominations — 16! — for any film in #Oscars history.
Ryan Coogler has now added his name to legacy. Following tonight's win, Coogler makes history as the second Black filmmaker to win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Jordan Peele first broke that barrier in March 2018 when he became the first Black writer to win in the category for 'Get Out,' reshaping the genre and the industry in the process.
These wins signify Black storytelling is original. And when given the space, it is undeniable. 🖤
