One of the biggest lessons from the DOJ mess since Trump first became president is that you cannot rely on these so-called elite pedigree lawyers, i.e. the ones who were groomed from day one, went through Ivy League law schools, built a web of establishment relationships, grabbed six-figure law firm jobs, and then temporarily rotated into government roles.

Trump’s first DOJ was packed with people like that, and so was his White House counsel’s office. It is not that they are necessarily bad people. They are just too invested in their own elite world to be the kind of fighters the moment demands, always keeping one eye on their path back into the cocktail circuit with a lucrative white shoe signing bonus once Trump is gone.

What you really need are lawyers from outside that world, like Lindsey Halligan and Ed Martin, who do not care about elite social circles or their resume and simply focus on the mission.
