@donnalionista It's all very simple. Any Australia Day recognition on 26 January guarantees one thing - Division Day. The conflict will not go away. Solution? Wattle Day on 1 September becomes Australia Day ... in the land of 1000 wattles.

🇦🇺|Students at the University of Sydney have just done something unprecedented in the history of Australian higher education.
Over 4,000 students participated in the vote. More than 3,500 voted in favor of cutting ties with Israel. 86% supported an academic boycott of Israeli universities. 86% supported ending research collaborations with companies that supply weapons to Israel.
This is the largest campus boycott vote in Australia to date.
University administration had previously dismissed similar votes as "unrepresentative." Thousands of students have just answered that claim.
What the Vote Entailed
The motions voted on by students included:
◾Academic boycott of Israeli universities: Ending formal partnerships with Israeli higher education institutions.
◾ Ending weapons research collaborations: Cutting off research contracts with companies that supply weapons and military technology to Israel.
◾Divestment: Demanding the university withdraw from investments linked to Israel.
An 86% approval rate. With over 4,000 votes cast. This is not a fringe voice; it is an overwhelming majority.
Why This Matters
First, it shatters the university's excuses. University of Sydney management had previously refused to acknowledge similar motions, citing "low turnout" or a lack of representativeness. With over 4,000 participants, this vote saw higher turnout than most student union elections. The university can no longer claim that "this does not represent the students."
Second, it is the largest campus boycott vote in Australian history. This means it is not an isolated incident; it is part of the Australian student movement and the global campus movement to boycott Israel. From the US to the UK, from Canada to Australia, students are using votes and protests to tell their universities: you cannot speak of "human rights" while collaborating with accomplices to genocide.
Third, it targets a core source of university funding. Research collaborations with weapons companies are a significant revenue stream for many Australian universities. Severing these ties is not merely a moral gesture; it entails real financial loss. Students have voted to call on the university to forgo this revenue. This is a serious challenge.
Fourth, this is happening while the genocide in Gaza is still unfolding. This is not a celebration following a "historic vote"; it is an ongoing struggle. Every day that Gaza is under bombardment, students are organizing, voting, protesting, and taking action on campus. They are not simply "commemorating"—they are acting.
What will the university administration do?
They might say, "This is a student vote; it is non-binding." They might say, "We need to consider the value of academic partnerships with Israeli universities." They might say, "We will review these motions."
But they can no longer say, "Students don't care."
4,000 people voted. 86% were in favor. This is public opinion. This is the will of the students. This is the stance of the university community.
If the administration ignores this, it tells students: Your voices do not matter. Your votes do not matter. Your opposition to genocide does not matter.
Students will remember. Next time, they will turn out in greater numbers. Next time, they will demand greater change. Next time, they will demand that the administration take action.
The bigger picture
The University of Sydney is not the first, nor will it be the last. From Columbia to the University of California, from Oxford to Cambridge, from Toronto to Melbourne, students are organizing, voting, protesting, and occupying. They are demanding that their universities sever ties with Israel. They are demanding divestment. They are demanding an academic boycott.
This is not mere "campus politics." It is part of a global boycott movement. It is an extension of the BDS movement onto university campuses. It is the way ordinary people say "no" to genocide.
Students at the University of Sydney have voted. 86% support a boycott. Now, the ball is in the administration's court.
Sever ties. Free Palestine.

The crossbench - led by @davidpocock and @sophiescamps - introduced an omnibus bill last week to stop Australia enabling genocide.
Most of the mainstream media ignored it, and Labor and the Coalition voted to block a Senate inquiry into the Red Lines Package – a highly unusual move.
So we're sharing the key details of the Red Lines Package. 👇️

@elliemail When is a factual error a lie?
What is the dollar value of the Hughes property empire?
Can rich capitalists relate to ordinary citizens and taxpayers? Answer - No.
The issues are 1) the 70 yr occupation 2) the apartheid used to enforce it 3) the settlements, all illegal under int’l law 4) the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank & Gaza 5) the war crimes that amount to a genocide. Not anti-semitism but the truth about what’s now a pariah state
@Tauwhituvtcm@tonywalker1 In all these cases we need a public list of the witch hunters -who attacked people in radio, music, sports journalism, footballers, authors, festivals, researchers.
They should be named and shamed.

Wrote a piece in the AFR today about how we can maximise AI’s big economic opportunities while we manage its risks.
Government, business and community can work together to make Australians beneficiaries, not victims, of this accelerating change.
We are well positioned to be a big winner of the AI economic revolution if we get this right, which is why AI will be a big focus of the Intergenerational Report in a few weeks and why the Australian standards for AI the PM announced in July are so important.
