Anthropic's result on HAWK and AES-128 does not touch Bitcoin directly. SHA-256 and ECDSA are mathematically unrelated to this attack. That distinction is important and worth stating clearly.

But the more precise observation is this: ECDSA, which secures Bitcoin, Ethereum, and most major blockchain infrastructure, is already theoretically vulnerable to Shor's algorithm on a fault-tolerant quantum system. That is not new information. What is new is the pace at which AI is now advancing cryptanalysis.

A year ago, no AI system was producing meaningful results against serious cryptographic primitives. Today one has roughly halved the effective security of a NIST post-quantum signature candidate. That changes how we should think about migration timelines.

The question was never whether ECDSA remains secure under quantum pressure. The question is whether deployed blockchain systems complete their migration to post-quantum signature schemes before that pressure becomes operational. HAWK was one of the more credible candidates for that transition. That it has been weakened by the same AI advancing this frontier is worth taking seriously.
