A FEW QUERIES ON ISL FIASCO

Jamshedpur FC’s withdrawal from the ISL is like a bolt from the blue for Indian football. It has brought forth the discussion about JFC’s inability to pay the first instalment of Rs. 55 lakhs as the participation fee by the scheduled date fixed by the AIFF.

Fine. However, some people from within the system have raised a few pertinent questions that need to be answered with clarity.

1) The rights for the ISL have not yet been handed over to the clubs formally. No official agreement has been signed, the SPV has not been created. In that case, how can the AIFF press the club for payments and even use strongarm tactics?

2) If a few Executive Committee members are to be believed, then the Exco has no official intimation about the ISL rights being transferred to the clubs. Then what was the official position of the AIFF when money changed hands from 13 other clubs?

3) The AIFF has demanded a fine of Rs. One lakh per day if Rs. 55 lakh is not deposited in time. Under which Indian law an interest of more than 600 percent can be charged from a defaulter?

It’s unfortunate that @JamshedpurFC has decided to withdraw from the @IndSuperLeague - we at @bengalurufc are more determined than ever to get Indian football to the place where it deserves to be - all of us clubs in the @IndianFootball will work hard for the players, for the fans of this beautiful game - there is talent a plenty - now that the clubs are running the league it will definitely be much more sustainable and a much better property. The league will grow organically - i could not be more excited about the league. Last year in a curtailed league stadium attendance was up everywhere showing how important local clubs are for the development for the game - no clubs, no national team can be formed! Clubs are the backbone of the game everywhere

WHY DID JAMSHEDPUR FC QUIT ISL?

The decision of Jamshedpur FC to pull out of the ISL is almost like the final nail in the coffin of Indian football, which has hit an all-time low on every front in the last couple of years.

Consider this:

When the ISL was on the verge of collapse last season, particularly following the departure of AIFF's long-time marketing partners, JFC exhibited remarkable restraint in a situation of total stagnation. While other clubs flexed muscles and made several uncomplimentary remarks publicly against the AIFF, JFC, in all meetings, reaffirmed their commitment to play football.

What did they receive in return? Early this month, when JFC requested the AIFF to provide them some time for paying the first instalment of the participating fee (Rs. 55 lakhs) because of some technical issues, the AIFF Deputy Secretary General M. Satyanarayan wrote them back in a language that was far from being polite.

Here are a few excerpts from the letter written dated July 22, 2026, to JFC, backed by the country’s most respected corporate house:

“….It is therefore a matter of concern that your club has failed to honour mutually agreed timeline for payment of first instalment of your club’s share of the administrative fee.

“….A unilateral departure from commitments mutually accepted by all stakeholders is inconsistent with that understanding and places an unavoidable burden on the AIFF’s planning and financial administration.”

Satyanarayan didn’t stop here. He went further ahead threatening to impose fine on JFC.

He wrote: “Consequently, your club is liable to pay a default charge of INR 1,00,000 (Rupees One lakh only) for each day of default, calculated from 21 July, 2026 until the date of receipt of payment.

“Your club is hereby called upon to remit the outstanding Administrative Fee with the applicable default charges on or before 31 July 2026, which shall be treated as the final opportunity for compliance with payment….”

Now, is it fair to hold Tata Trusts accountable for their decision to quietly withdraw from the ISL?

If you dig deep the selection cretaria on youth team you will find how it's done. Club quota is given priority useless players from aiff fifa academy get selected.
