Rail and the Environment: Building a Low-Carbon and Climate-Resilient Transport System for Africa

PRASA continues to modernise rail through its new EMU train fleet while incorporating sustainability into station development. Durban Station’s solar energy installation highlights the role of alternative energy in building greener rail infrastructure.

Looking ahead to 2030, the focus is on reducing carbon emissions, developing climate-resilient infrastructure and shifting more freight from road to rail to support a more sustainable transport system across Africa.

#SARARail2026 | Passenger Rail Renaissance 🚆

PRASA Chief Economist, Chris Lotter, joined the panel discussion on Passenger Rail Renaissance: Building Safe, Reliable and Integrated Mobility Systems, highlighting the wider economic benefits of passenger rail.

Beyond moving people, rail contributes to household savings by providing affordable transport, with average fares ranging between R8 and R12 per ticket.

Through its secondary mandate, PRASA, via @IntersiteInvest , maximises the value of its property assets to help ease the financial pressure on passenger fares and subsidies.

The goal is clear: to keep passenger rail safe, reliable and affordable, while supporting economic growth and improving connectivity.

Through the #RebuildingRail programme, the organisation developed a recovery strategy focused on strengthening governance, from the Board to management, and ensuring leadership stability.

She emphasised the importance of transparency with stakeholders about the challenges facing the organisation, while developing practical solutions to overcome them. Board members also took an active role on the ground, monitoring the implementation of the recovery plan and progress in rebuilding the railway network. @SaraRail_Org
