VC Sajjanar, #Hyderabad Police Commissioner, Demonstrated how to spot #AdulteratedSpices :

The CP placed adulterated and pure Cloves, Shahjeera, Fennel Seeds (Saunf) into separate transparent glasses filled with water.

The water containing the adulterated, chemically-coated spices changed color immediately, whereas pure spices did not.

Genuine cloves and seeds feel rough and natural, while chemical-coated adulterated feel unnaturally smooth.

Task Force and H-FAST (Hyderabad Food Adulteration Surveillance Team) DCP, Vaibhav Gaikwad showed certain Adulterated Mustard Seeds not lose colour even after mixing in water and said:

At one of the manufacturing facilities, low-quality and rejected mustard stocks were adulterated by mixing fabric dye, talcum powder, and oil to enhance the spice’s gloss, weight, and overall volume.

In other units, spices such as cloves and shahjeera were found coated with synthetic colours to give them a bright and premium appearance. Permanent industrial dyes were used to adulterate Cloves, Shahjeera, Saunf, and several other essential spices.

The accused said that they learnt of the adulteration methods from Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Sajjanar said.

Holding a sachet used for adulterating mustard seeds, Mr. Sajjanar said ‘poisonous and non-edible’ was written on it.

The exemplary work carried out by Shri Tukaram Mundhe as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner in Maharashtra deserves to be emulated across the country. Every Indian has the fundamental right to safe, healthy, and high-quality food.

It is time for the Supreme Court of India to take suo motu cognisance of this issue and direct FDA authorities across all states to adopt the same level of commitment, transparency, and strict enforcement demonstrated by Shri Tukaram Mundhe.

The time has also come to ask a serious question of all former FDA Commissioners in Maharashtra, as well as FDA Commissioners across India: What concrete steps have you taken to ensure that citizens receive safe and quality food? If one officer can demonstrate that strict, prompt, and effective enforcement is possible, why has such action not become the norm throughout the country?

Food safety is not a privilege—it is a basic right of every citizen. Those entrusted with protecting public health must be held accountable for ensuring that adulteration, contamination, and unsafe food practices are dealt with swiftly and decisively. Every Indian deserves access to safe, healthy, and quality food.
