Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR.

We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. Historically, the discovery of such programmable systems has helped revolutionize medicine. CRISPR, for instance, is now the foundation of genetic medicines. But it will take much more work to learn what this system does, and whether it can be put to similar use.

When “governance”, “assurance”, and “risk” become catch-all labels for management activity, they stop distinguishing anything with precision.

Beyond VUCA

The governed environment has become almost unrecognisable.

VUCA once startled leaders by naming a world that had become volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous.

We soon outgrew it.

BANI followed: brittle, anxious, nonlinear, and incomprehensible. It described systems that appeared strong until they shattered, decisions made under persistent anxiety, causes and consequences separated by scale and time, and outcomes that resisted explanation.

Even that language now feels insufficient.

The world does not merely change more quickly. It changes character while we are trying to understand it. Technologies alter agency. Information multiplies while confidence weakens. Events cross institutional, territorial, commercial, political, and social boundaries before established reporting cycles can describe what has happened. Familiar systems continue to look familiar while behaving in unfamiliar ways.

The governed environment has moved beyond the assumptions on which many governing arrangements still depend.

The Board must nevertheless govern.

It must determine what is happening, what matters, what can reasonably be relied upon, what remains uncertain, and what course the organisation should follow.

Board portals can circulate the papers.

Dashboards can report the measures.

Professional advisers can interpret their respective fields.

None of them, alone, provides the Board with a coherent line of sight across evidence, uncertainty, authority, consequence, and judgement.
