"Public communication should always be prioritized before any other work is undertaken. How can Ningde develop well without a local newspaper?"
After assuming the position of Party chief in Ningde, Fujian province in 1988, Xi Jinping made it a top priority to revive a newspaper that had ceased publication nearly two decades ago. Hence, Mindong Paper, which had been suspended in 1969, received a new lease of life.
With no funding, offices, or staff, the project faced various challenges. Xi played a crucial role in securing 100,000 yuan ($13,928) and acquiring an office for the newspaper. Additionally, a local journalist was chosen to lead the publication.
Months later, Mindong Paper hit the press. The first edition included a foreword by Xi, and shortly after, nine correspondent posts were established throughout the prefecture. The newspaper was later renamed Mindong Daily.

"Common prosperity is not just an economic issue, but a major political issue that ties into our Party’s foundation for governance. We absolutely cannot allow the wealth gap to keep getting bigger – the poor to grow poorer as the rich keep getting richer. We absolutely cannot allow an unbridgeable gulf to open up between the wealthy and the poor."
