CKD is not one-size-fits-all
Patients may share similar kidney numbers, but differ in causes, risks, biology, symptoms, and treatment response.
Personalised medicine aims to make kidney care more precise, targeted, and patient-centred.

PICKED at ERA 2026 in Glasgow ๐ฌ
Julia Byrska and Abukayo M will present their work through oral and poster presentations at the 63rd ERA Congress.
Great to see PICKED research represented at ERA!

Urine can tell us more than standard kidney markers alone.
Peptidomics studies small protein fragments in urine that may reflect tissue damage, inflammation, fibrosis, progression, or treatment response.
Another layer for more personalised CKD care.

In #CKD, โhigh riskโ is not just one #kidney function number.
Two patients can have the same #eGFR but very different outlooks depending on albuminuria, blood pressure, diabetes, biomarkers, genetics, and disease history.
Better risk prediction means better timing and care.
A promising biomarker is only the beginning.
Before it can guide patient care, it must be validated across cohorts, labs, and real clinical settings.
That takes time, and it should.
Validation protects patients and turns research into real impact.
#CKD#Biomarkers#PICKED
Kidney research does not automatically become better patient care.
Between discovery and real-world use lies a gap: validation, regulation, reimbursement, data protection, workflows, and proof of impact.
Closing that gap is how research becomes benefit.

Uremic toxins are more than urea.
In CKD, different toxins can accumulate, some easier to remove, others harder and linked to inflammation, symptoms, or cardiovascular risk.
Personalised kidney care means looking beyond one number.

PICKED at the ERKNet Annual Meeting 2026 in Lyon, with Jeremy Power and Sheila Murunga representing their work within the project.
A opportunity for exchange, networking, and connecting with the rare kidney disease community.

CKD care canโt be only lab numbers (eGFR, creatinine, K+).
Two patients with similar labs can feel very different, fatigue, itch, sleep issues, cramps, brain fog, mood.
QoL is a core outcome: track symptoms + shared decisions.

Endothelial dysfunction = the blood vessel lining stops working well (โ vasodilation, โ permeability/inflammation/clotting)
In CKD this helps explain why kidney risk and cardiovascular risk travel together, often reflected by albuminuria too.

Creatinine can mislead.
Muscle mass, meat/creatine, exercise, dehydration, and some meds can shift it without true GFR change.
Look at trends + uACR (ยฑ cystatin C).

Hematuria = blood in urine, but where it comes from matters.
Glomerular (kidney filter) โ dysmorphic red blood cells (RBCs) / RBC casts.
Urologic (downstream) โ round, normal RBCs.
Microscopy adds meaning.

How do we protect patient data in personalised medicine, not just today, but in 10 years?๐
Privacy by design: minimise data, limit purpose, pseudonymise + control access, secure by default, be transparent.
And yes, plan for a post-quantum future.

Kidney screening & awareness in Agde ๐ซ๐ท
On World Kidney Day, Jeremy Power supported NDSGโs supermarket stand, reminding people CKD can be silent and early tests (urine dipstick + creatinine) matter.
