Georgia High School Football Legends: @QuincyLCarter โ The Dual-Threat Pioneer
๐Powered by @RecruitNE_GA
When the conversation turns to the greatest quarterbacks in Georgia high school football history, one name will always be part of that discussionโQuincy Carter.
Before starring at the University of Georgia and becoming the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, Carter was rewriting the record books at Southwest DeKalb High School. During the mid-1990s, he became the face of one of Georgia's most dominant football programs, combining elite athleticism, a powerful arm, and dynamic running ability into a skill set that was years ahead of its time.
A Champion at Southwest DeKalb
Under legendary head coach Buck Godfrey, Carter led Southwest DeKalb to the 1995 GHSA Class AAAA State Championship, cementing his place among Georgia's all-time greats. The Panthers were one of the most complete teams in the state, and Carter's leadership and playmaking ability were the driving force behind their championship run.
By the time his high school career came to an end, Carter had put together numbers that were extraordinary for his era:
Career Statistics
- 4,450 Passing Yards
- 37 Passing Touchdowns
- 1,489 Rushing Yards
- 32 Rushing Touchdowns
Long before dual-threat quarterbacks became common, Carter was proving that a quarterback could dominate with both his arm and his legs. His ability to extend plays, make defenders miss, and throw accurately on the run made him nearly impossible to defend.
One of Georgia's Most Decorated Recruits
Carter's senior season earned him nearly every major honor available to a high school football player. He was named:
- Atlanta Journal-Constitution All-Classification Player of the Year
- Associated Press All-Classification Player of the Year
- Parade All-American
- USA Today Georgia Player of the Year
His combination of size, athleticism, arm talent, and winning pedigree made him one of the highest-rated quarterback prospects Georgia had ever produced.
More Than Just a Football Star
Football wasn't Carter's only sport.
He was also an elite baseball prospect and was selected in the second round of the 1996 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs. After spending two seasons in professional baseball, he enrolled at the University of Georgia, where he immediately became the Bulldogs' starting quarterback.
During his collegiate career, Carter threw for 6,447 yards, ranking second in school history at the time. His success led to the Dallas Cowboys selecting him in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft, where he became the team's starting quarterback and helped guide Dallas to the playoffs during the 2003 season.
A Legacy Beyond Football
Like many athletes, Carter's journey included adversity. Instead of allowing those challenges to define him, he has dedicated himself to mentoring young quarterbacks and giving back to the game that helped shape his life. Today, he works with aspiring athletes while continuing to serve the football community around Atlanta.
In 2023, Carter received one of the highest honors in the state when he was inducted into the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fameโa fitting recognition for one of Georgia's greatest high school quarterbacks.
