Blackman Middle School is celebrating the success of two students, Jack Noelle (seventh grade) and Emma Tiffany (eighth grade), who earned top honors in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) American History Essay Contest.
The DAR Essay Contest is a nationwide competition that encourages students in grades five through eight to explore American history through research and writing. This year’s prompt, “Lunch with a Signer,” asked students to imagine sharing a meal with one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and explain how that individual’s actions contributed to the founding of the United States as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary.
Blackman Middle’s participation in the contest was inspired by the school’s work toward the Tennessee Governor’s Civics Seal, an initiative supported by Rutherford County Schools’ social studies specialist Lee Ramsey. The Civics Seal promotes authentic civic engagement and a deeper understanding of American history.
ELA teachers April Baird, Frances Federici and Yates used the contest as an opportunity to blend informational and narrative writing while strengthening students’ research skills. Students were supported throughout the process by their teachers and Blackman’s librarian, Shepherd.
Noelle and Tiffany advanced through the Murfreesboro chapter, regional and state levels, representing the strong instruction and commitment to student learning at Blackman Middle School.
