Last week we had the privilege of speaking to the @WitsUniversity 2026 Actuarial Honours BSc class.

It was a great opportunity to share with the next generation (AI Natives) about the practical use of AI in industry, and workshop how it will be used in Actuarial risk modelling, reserving and product development. The type questions asked by the class just go to show how bright our talent base is in South Africa. (We might have learnt more than they did!)

Town Hall takeover by Creative Director Tom Theme: Eating our own dog food, er, drinking our own champagne…

As always, we start with saying hello to the new faces, a warm welcome to Vusi, Musawenkosi, Artem, Ireton and Hubert. We wish you the best in your respective roles and can’t wait to see what amazing work you will produce.

Tom also took us through one of his latest side projects. He was tasked with putting together a marketing budget for the year but in typical Pygio fashion, he went the extra mile and built a fully integrated web app to manage this. Tom is a designer by training, and building a dashboard from scratch to deployment world not have been possible a year ago but with the advancements in AI (notably @claudeai for this project) it is now completely possible. We integrated this fully using our own Assembly and @Snowflake instance, so the webapp has full context on our while business.

The key is to lean on your specific skill set, give the model as much context as possible and let the AI fill in the gaps. Then most importantly, identify areas where the AI’s work needs to be checked by an actual expert and get it reviewed.

Dimitri had to field some tough but good questions in our latest monthly town hall at Pygio. One being from Ruslan: "What can an engineer like me do to facilitate the adoption of AI with our clients?"

It is a question that cuts to the core of the current industry anxiety. While the headlines are filled with FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) about AI displacing the workforce, the hard data tells a different story. In the US alone, demand for software engineers and data scientists has actually increased quarter-on-quarter.

The shift we are seeing is not about displacement; it is about the evolution of the craftsperson.

Ruslan’s role, and the role of every expert at Pygio, is moving from manual execution to strategic steering. We are moving from a world where you hit every keystroke to a world where you guide and curate the output of intelligent agents.
