« La décision prise hier de suspendre, à titre probatoire pour une durée d’un an, l’application de la suspension automatique d’un match suite au carton rouge infligé au joueur Folarin Balogun a franchi une ligne rouge.

Le football, comme tout autre sport, repose sur des règles, fondements d’une compétition équitable, honnête et transparente. Si certaines règles peuvent parfois prêter à interprétation, ce n’est pas le cas ici.

Lorsque la certitude des règles n'est plus garantie par leurs garants, l'intégrité du jeu est menacée et la crédibilité de la compétition compromise. De même, une telle décision crée un précédent dans le tournoi en cours, où des situations similaires exigeront désormais un traitement identique, au détriment de la compétition.

Le football est le sport le plus apprécié au monde car c'est un beau jeu et il inspire confiance car il est pratiqué partout selon les mêmes règles. Un tournoi n'est jamais un phénomène isolé et, s'il s'agit de la Coupe du Monde, il peut avoir des conséquences positives ou négatives sur le football dans son ensemble.

Nous exprimons notre incrédulité face à une décision aussi inédite, incompréhensible et injustifiable. »
