Today, @AUC_PAPS is convening a pivotal 3-day Technical Consultative Meeting with RECs and technical experts to review two landmark instruments: the Draft AU Policy Framework on Women's Equal Participation in Mediation and Peace Processes and the Draft Principles on the Integration of Women in Mediation, a critical step toward institutionalizing women's meaningful and influential participation across #AU peace processes.
In their opening remarks, Amb. @madutdet, Head of the Mediation and Dialogue Division and Ms. @mpoumoudoris, Special Representative of the @UN Women Liaison Office to the AU and UNECA, underscored the need to move from dialogue to decisive implementation.
To achieve this, the meeting will pursue four interconnected objectives: (i) to address and dismantle structural barriers by providing targeted, substantive feedback that breaks systemic exclusion; (ii), to amplify proven practice by showcasing successful integration of women in mediation from RECs, @FemWiseAfrica, and experts across local, national, and regional levels; (iii) to enforce accountability by proposing practical and implementable measures including binding quotas and gender-sensitive capacity building that make inclusion mandatory, not optional; and (iv), to forge AU-RECs consensus that transforms shared commitments into action-oriented recommendations, ensuring these documents become operational, not aspirational.

Behind every winning political campaign is discipline, not luck. Political Campaigns aren’t won by chance, they’re built and political power respects preparation.

When the Church Speaks in a Time of Division : Glen Mpani
Today I attended church knowing that the service would not be an easy one.
With the planned march on Tuesday and the growing tensions around foreign nationals in South Africa, I wondered how the Church would navigate one of the most emotional and polarising issues confronting our nation.
As a Zimbabwean who has lived outside my country of birth for more than 25 years, I have been privileged to study, work and live across different parts of the world. Those experiences have taught me that migration is rarely a simple story. Behind every migrant is a human being with hopes, fears and dreams. Equally, behind every frustrated citizen is often a legitimate cry for dignity, opportunity and a government that delivers.
What struck me most was the balanced statement delivered by my Bishop, Mosa Sono.
His message neither ignored the pain of South Africans nor dismissed the humanity of foreign nationals.
Six points stood out.
First, he placed the current crisis where it belongs: at the feet of failed elected leadership. When governments consistently fail to provide jobs, safety, healthcare and other public services, societies inevitably begin searching for someone to blame.
Second, he acknowledged the genuine frustrations of millions of South Africans who continue to endure poor service delivery, unemployment and inequality. Those concerns deserve to be heard, not dismissed.
Third, he unequivocally condemned criminality and violence in any form. Crime has no nationality, and violence against innocent people can never be justified.
Fourth, he affirmed the constitutional right of people to protest peacefully while equally defending the rights and safety of those who choose not to participate. Rights lose their meaning when they are only applied selectively.
Fifth, he reminded the church of God’s instruction concerning the stranger. Scripture is remarkably consistent on this matter.
“The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt.” (Leviticus 19:34)
And again,
“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2)
Finally, he made perhaps the most uncomfortable but necessary observation. Removing foreign nationals will not resolve South Africa’s underlying crisis of governance, unemployment, corruption and poor service delivery. Those challenges existed before migration intensified and will remain unless they are addressed through accountable leadership.
According to the latest available estimates, South Africa hosts several million foreign-born residents, the majority of whom are in the country legally and contribute through work, entrepreneurship and taxes. Yet migration alone cannot explain an unemployment rate exceeding 30% or decades of infrastructure and service delivery failures. Those are governance challenges that require governance solutions.
As Tuesday approaches, emotions will undoubtedly run high.
My prayer is that South Africans will protest peacefully, that law enforcement will protect every person without fear or favour, and that political leaders will have the courage to confront the real causes of our national challenges instead of allowing vulnerable communities to become convenient scapegoats.
Whatever happens on Tuesday, one thing became clear to me today.
The voice of the Church remains a call to truth, justice, compassion and peace.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)
