New paper out with @JJohnston_Bates! 🌱 Seed rain aids natural regeneration in semi-arid floodplains, with low exotic species—but differs from extant vegetation. Protecting vegetation patches is key for biotic connectivity! 🌾

Excited to share our new paper! We found that many modified waterways in northern Sweden supported vegetation communities surprisingly similar to natural streams. These human modified systems may now play an important role in maintaining biodiversity.

I was lucky enough to travel to the UK to join ditch researchers from around the world in brainstorming and developing this paper. Fanstatic to see it published!
I'm thrilled to see this paper out, which I co-led with @DitchOntologist, and featuring input from loads of excellent co-authors. It's our interdisciplinary perspective on ditches; what they do, why they matter, and how we should look after them.

It's #WorldWetlandsDay! No grand vistas of peatlands from me; let's give some love to our ditches instead. Often ignored, but they can be beautiful and (sometimes) biodiverse; lines of wilder land in managed landscapes, and they are there in @RamsarConv if you read closely.
Interested in how ditches have affected soils and vegetation? Read out new article where we investigate more than 4000 sites across Sweden https://t.co/prhs4hdCSw
I am recruiting a PhD student (in Umeå but trips to Uppsala too) for a project: Identifying, understanding and managing aquatic biodiversity in intensively managed forests and under an increasingly extreme climate.
Deadline: October 31!

Happy Father's Day to all the dads and dad figures! 👨👧👦
Male emus incubate and look after the chicks. This dad was spotted protecting his babies from the rain in Yarnbala, Coffin Bay, SA.

Congratulations Professors Fran Sheldon @franshel65 & Samantha Capon, & Dr @PZivec for their publication which discusses drivers & barriers of natural regeneration of #wetlands under #climatechange, along with implications for management

Read my latest paper here.
Key adaption approaches include integrated land & water management, protecting and promoting key biotic and abiotic processes within landscapes, and reconsidering current exotic species management strategies.
Awesome plenary by @GriffithARI Director Prof David Hamilton @profhamatham - why broadening your perspective to the macro is so important when looking to restore ecosystems - might even help explain the micro. #SEFS13
Day one of #SEFS13 in Newcastle, UK!
Catch my talk in the Ditching misconceptions symposium tomorrow afternoon from 4.15pm.
I’ll be giving a conceptual talk about the role of Swedish forest ditches as novel ecosystems.
NEW PAPER OUT 🚨! This paper emphasises the importance of natural regeneration of wetland ecosystems as an effective restoration approach under climate change. @GriffithARI@franshel65 https://t.co/Ne3vGxdjHP
