Shanmugaiah and Kurunthamma, an elderly couple from Tenkasi in Tamil Nadu, found that a truck had fallen on a railway track.

They ran in the wee hours, waved torchlight at the train's locopilot & stopped an approaching train. They averted potential disaster and saved many lives.

She said that Haldwani violence was pre-planned, rioters had collected stones on rooftops, used petrol bombs, set vehicles on fire and attacked the Municipal & Police team.

The violence started by the radical mob after the demolition of an “illegally built” madrasa.
