A well-deserved retirement for a very good boy.

After more than six years of dedicated service, K-9 Kimbo is officially retiring from the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office. Since joining the K-9 Unit in March 2019, Kimbo has completed 306 operational deployments, contributed to 112 arrests, helped locate 96 individuals, and assisted in 181 seizures.

But behind every number is a loyal partner who showed up every day ready to work. Kimbo served alongside Master Deputy M. Cole, and Corporal S. Santa Maria, building strong bonds with each of his handlers along the way.

Now, Kimbo gets to trade his days on duty for well-deserved time playing, relaxing, and being spoiled by his first handler, Master Deputy Cole.

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office is grateful for the lasting impact Kimbo has made on our agency and community. He's earned every belly rub, treat, and day of retirement ahead.

This is Ryan. Afghanistan. Three deployments. Night terrors every single night for eight years. Wakes up screaming between 2 and 4 AM. His VA counselor recommended a psychiatric service dog. $30,000 training cost. Insurance doesn't cover it. Ryan couldn't afford it. So last November he adopted Max from a rescue in Tucson. Four-year-old black Lab. "Washed out" of service dog training. Too anxious around crowds. First night home, Ryan had a nightmare at 3 AM. Max jumped on the bed without being asked.
Laid his entire 90-pound body across Ryan's chest. Ryan woke up. Didn't scream this time. Just held Max and cried quietly. Max stayed there until Ryan fell back asleep. Now Max does this automatically.
Every single night. Ryan's therapist reviewed the bedroom camera footage.
Told him: "That's deep pressure therapy. That's the exact protocol we train $30,000 service dogs to perform." Max failed service dog school for being too sensitive. But he's exactly what Ryan needed.
Sometimes the rejects are actually perfect.

Winston’s Journey of Learning to Heal Through Persistent Kisses for the Horses 💖✨

Every morning at the sanctuary, the same curious scene unfolds: Winston, a large bull, walks along the row of stalls, poking his damp nose through each doorway and attempting to give a “kiss” to any horse that comes out.

In response, Trigger, the first horse, repeatedly turns his head away, even giving Winston a gentle nip to discourage him. But Winston does not leave. He remains there, patiently waiting until the carer leads him away, only to return to exactly the same spot the following morning.

From a media perspective, this is simply a charming short clip. But from the perspective of animal behavioural science, Winston’s persistence despite repeated rejection can be viewed as a deeply moving process of psychological recovery for a creature whose sense of security was disrupted early in life.

Childhood Trauma and “Social Deprivation”

Winston arrived at the sanctuary when he was only two months old, an age at which a calf would ordinarily be curled up beside its mother, learning to experience the world through the security of the herd. Being separated and abandoned so early left a significant gap in his early social development. In developmental biology, such deprivation of social interaction can be understood as social deprivation, leaving Winston to enter his new environment with wide, apprehensive eyes.

Yet once his basic needs for food and shelter had been met, his suppressed need for social connection began to emerge. Winston did not retreat into passive fear. Instead, he chose to approach the world around him, actively seeking reassurance through contact.

A Mismatch of Languages and an Instinctive Means of Easing Tension

Winston’s repeated attempts to lick the horses’ faces are not merely playful behaviour. In the behavioural repertoire of ruminants, allogrooming is an important social behaviour associated with oxytocin release, lower cortisol levels, and reduced physiological arousal. It is one of the instinctive ways in which cattle can regulate tension and establish social bonds.

Yet this language is “mistranslated” when it encounters horses. As animals that are highly sensitive to personal distance, horses may interpret a large animal approaching directly towards the face as an intrusion into their personal space. Trigger’s nip is simply a clear refusal: “Please step back.”

What makes Winston remarkable is his apparent lack of avoidance behaviour. Despite the signals telling him to retreat, Winston does not seem to interpret them as a reason to abandon his approach. For him, the need to seek social reassurance appears to outweigh the fear of rejection. He patiently continues offering the same friendly gesture until the other animal is ready to accept it.

The Resonance Between Creatures That Have Known Hardship

The most beautiful part of the story comes when Winston’s language finally finds an answering frequency. Ronnie and Cash, two other rescued horses who had also experienced hardship in the past, do not turn away. Instead, they remain where they are, lower their heads, and willingly wait for Winston’s affectionate licks.

Animal psychology recognises that individuals who have experienced adversity may become particularly sensitive to distinguishing non-threatening signals from genuine danger. Over time, Winston’s consistent behaviour appears to have allowed Ronnie and Cash to become familiar with his intentions, helping their responses move from heightened alertness towards greater calm and trust. Their interspecies bond is formed not through coercion, but through the predictability of behaviour and the safety created by continued presence.

From a bewildered two-month-old calf facing an unfamiliar world, Winston has used simple persistence to build a network of emotional security for himself.

Animals do not define friendship through declarations or complex explanations. They express it through patient presence each day: by approaching, accepting rejection, and continuing to offer warmth until the distance between two different species gradually disappears.
