Received my first piece of horrific hate mail after writing this piece for the @nytimes. Shocked me at first and then made me smile. It's a sign that this history matters. Technology is not neutral. Is there a racial bias in photography? Oh yes: https://t.co/Td1dlPsC5o
@erdutton How ever we frame it, I like (and do my best) to frame math as one of many ways to see and interact with the world. How have you handled this as a teacher? (2/2)
@erdutton I often speak to my personal experience and how math gives me ways of seeing the world differently. I suspect phrasing it as "math grows our brains" also has that hint of reinforcing the unearned privilege of math as the arbiter of smart. (1/2)
Started listening to this pdcast about librarians as digital literacy educators for students at all ages today. The whole series is about digital literacy too! #connected295
@RobertVJoseph Also, I worry about the false equivalence of comparing students in prestigious unis. who lost an opportunity to learn good character to those who were denied access to a prestigious education that by all rights they had earned and deserved.
@RobertVJoseph Do I think they've been done a disservice in what they've been taught about failure, success, and earning whats yours? Ya but its hard to call that victimizing within a culture that primarily defines success as prestige and wealth and often only pays lip service to good character
@robertqberry @JonathonPuIIiam @ilana_horn Thank you! When I read it, I was working with predominantly white students. I hadn't thought about it in relation to controlling Black and Brown bodies. I think I see it now.
https://t.co/zCRQ5njEIP I'm late to the party, but Imma try something. hot take: OUSD put T.'s salary inc. first is a political move to pit T's against schools & students. 🔥: measuring Union success by $ gain devalues more important gains like classroom sizes. #connected295
Things you might work on tonight: Hacking Digital Texts (https://t.co/HVWZXEjztl), Personal Website (https://t.co/yuNoalwtyu), Digital Demo (https://t.co/BQZlnEgvQ5). Other things to do: Check in with Ari and Michelle & rotate through a maker-challenge demo #Connected295
I’ve never seen so many people packed into this room .@OUSDNews school board director Aimee Eng says if things get too rowdy here the board will reconvene upstairs in another meeting room. @KQEDnews
@ousd board position: budget reductions must happen to afford teacher raises. The public that showed up today doesn't buy it. #Unite4OaklandKids Student reps on the board fire back: "This board hasn't given me a reason to trust it."
Clarification: student director Yota Omosowho speaking. Is powerful. Proposes a temporary reduction to 2.5% from 3% reserve to preserve programs for student care like RJ, foster care, APISA. These kids are our future!
Why have an @ousd board meeting during the day? Depends on who you ask. Board says items were delayed from last week & have deadlines. Public comments: breach in transparency and trust. #Unite4OaklandKids
