Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi (born 5 October 1952) is a Pakistani former international cricketer, philanthropist, and politician who served as the 19th/22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan from August 2018 to April 2022.

He is the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and was its chairman from 1996 to 2023.

Cricket Career
Khan is widely regarded as one of Pakistan’s greatest cricketers and an outstanding all-rounder. He made his Test debut in 1971 against England and played until 1992. He captained the Pakistan team for much of the 1980s and early 1990s, leading it to its first (and only) Cricket World Cup title in 1992.

Career highlights include:
88 Tests: 3,807 runs (avg. 37.69) and 362 wickets (avg. 22.81)
Strong ODI and first-class records
Induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame (2009)

He is also known for pioneering aspects of reverse-swing bowling and advocating for neutral umpires.

Philanthropy
After retiring from cricket, Khan founded the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Lahore (opened 1994) in memory of his mother. It was Pakistan’s first major cancer hospital and has expanded with additional facilities. He has been involved in other charitable work as well.

Political Career
Khan founded PTI in 1996 on an anti-corruption and reform platform. After years as a marginal force, the party gained significant ground and formed a coalition government following the 2018 general election. He became prime minister on 18 August 2018.

His government focused on welfare programs (including during COVID-19), anti-corruption efforts, and a more independent foreign policy (closer ties with China and Russia, criticism of aspects of the US-led war on terror). He was removed from office on 10 April 2022 via a parliamentary no-confidence vote—the first Pakistani prime minister ousted this way. He alleged foreign (particularly US) involvement, which the US denied.

Current Status (as of mid-2026)
Khan has been imprisoned at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi since August 2023. He faces numerous legal cases and has received multiple convictions and sentences on corruption-related charges (including the Al-Qadir Trust and Toshakhana cases involving state gifts), among others. His party and supporters describe the cases as politically motivated; authorities maintain they are legitimate.

There have been ongoing concerns and reports about his prison conditions (including allegations of prolonged solitary confinement), health issues (notably eye problems requiring medical procedures), and restricted access for family and lawyers. A UN special rapporteur on torture has publicly criticized aspects of his detention. PTI continues to campaign for his release, with related political activity and protests.

Personal Life
Born in Lahore to a Pashtun (Niazi) family, he was educated at Aitchison College (Lahore), Royal Grammar School Worcester (England), and Keble College, Oxford (PPE degree). He has been married three times: to Jemima Goldsmith (1995–2004; two sons), Reham Khan (2015, brief), and Bushra Bibi (since 2018).

Khan remains a highly polarizing figure in Pakistan—viewed by supporters as an anti-establishment reformer and by critics as divisive or power-seeking.
