@wtgowers It's still a cool result but this context is completely absent from the write-up which is pure PR without any regards to the actual scientific meaning of the proofs
@wtgowers I'm very interested in this type of questions. This seems to be another case where the solution suggests this particular question wasn't as interesting as we thought, and a proof would have been orders of magnitude more interesting than a disproof
@mathprofcarrie .Drafting a group letter takes time and the IMU will make a decision imminently. I've just sent the IMU another letter with my own thoughts. The ICM won't happen in July in St Petersburg. I urged them to disassociate it from Russia entirely (not just postponement or hybrid event)
@mathprofcarrie Also, the letter was written before the actual invasion took place, when peace was at least a theoretical possibility. A letter written today would certainly be different.
@mathprofcarrie This was a consensus letter aiming to attract the largest possible number of signatories. Some of us are strongly in favour of relocating the ICM (not just postponing or moving online) and think choosing St Petersburg as the host city was a mistake from the beginning
@AlexKontorovich I'm not going to Russia not because I hope to accomplish something practical with this action, but because my conscience wouldn't allow me to be complicit of horrific and entirely unjustified loss of life and sovereignty
@j_mcelroy UBC/BC has many world leading experts in public health, virology, mathematical modeling, etc. Why doesn't UBC listen to their own experts instead of (or in addition to) the provincial authorities?
