People keep commenting to say they don't believe the asylum numbers in their towns...

The numbers for asylum and illegal migration simply do not explain the scale of what is happening.

That is why I am now widening the audit to include legal migration and resettlement routes too. In many cases, these are people from the same countries. The difference is that they have been granted a legal route or status by the Government

Take the Afghan resettlement programme.

According to the National Audit Office:

37,950 people had been resettled in Britain by December 2025.

The Government expects the eventual total to reach roughly 46,600 to 47,700 people.

Estimated total cost: £5.7 BILLION between 2021-22 and 2032-33.

Already spent by December 2025: £3.1 BILLION.

Still expected to be spent: roughly £2.6 BILLION.

That works out at around £120,000 per person across the programme if the final population is around 47,000. That figure is total programme expenditure, not cash handed directly to individuals.

Where does the money go?

£1.6bn transitional accommodation
£1.3bn integration
£1.2bn support before arrival in Britain
£800m settled accommodation
~£800m other programme expenditure

And council funding is layered on top of individual resettlement cases.

Local authorities can receive substantial per-person integration funding over several years, plus additional funding for education, English-language provision and exceptional costs.

So if you only look at asylum claims and irregular Channel crossings, you are looking at only part of the picture.

The wider system includes people brought in through formal Government-approved legal routes, with accommodation and integration spending attached.

The Government's own watchdog puts this Afghan programme alone at: £5,700,000,000.
