🌏🇯🇵🌀 JMA HOLDS SPECIAL TYPHOON BRIEFING AS JANGMI APPROACHES OKINAWA 📅
SUNDAY MAY 31, 2026 • 4:00 PM JST
🚨 Japan's Meteorological Agency (JMA) held a special press conference Sunday afternoon to discuss Typhoon Jangmi, highlighting growing concern for Okinawa as the storm continues moving north through the Philippine Sea.
While Jangmi is not currently forecast to become a major typhoon, officials stress that even a lower-end typhoon can still produce dangerous weather, travel disruptions, flooding, and localized damage.
📌 Key points from today's JMA briefing:
✔️ Weather conditions across Okinawa are expected to worsen beginning Monday.
✔️ Strong winds, heavy rain, rough seas, and transportation disruptions remain the primary concerns.
✔️ Impacts may continue into Tuesday, even if the center stays offshore.
✔️ Southern Kyushu is also being monitored closely as tropical moisture from Jangmi may interact with the Baiu (rainy season) front later this week.
✔️ Residents and travelers are encouraged to complete preparations before conditions begin deteriorating.

🌏🇯🇵🌀 TROPICAL STORM JANGMI TRACK SHIFTS CLOSER TO OKINAWA
📚 WEATHER TRANSLATED 🔄 UPDATED: FRIDAY MAY 29, 2026 • 11:00 AM JST
📍 Tropical Storm Jangmi continues moving northwest through the Philippine Sea, roughly 2,300 km (1,450 miles) south-southwest of Tokyo. Forecast models continue to strengthen the storm and bring it closer to Okinawa during the coming week.
❓ WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR OKINAWA, KYUSHU & SOUTHERN JAPAN?
🏝️ Right Now...
Honestly, not much.
Jangmi remains far from Japan, and there is no immediate threat to Okinawa, Kyushu, or anywhere else in the country today.
What has changed is the forecast track. Compared to a day ago, more forecasts now bring the storm closer to Okinawa next week.
🏝️ Okinawa
Okinawa remains the area in Japan most likely to see impacts if current forecast trends continue.
Possible impacts next week could include:
✔️ Heavy tropical downpours
✔️ Gusty winds
✔️ Rough seas and dangerous rip currents
✔️ Ferry and flight disruptions
✔️ Choppy beach conditions
It's still too early to know whether Okinawa sees a direct hit, a close pass, or only fringe effects.
🌋 Kyushu
For Kyushu, the answer remains the same:
It's simply too early to know.
Most forecasts keep the strongest impacts south of Kyushu through at least the next several days.
If Jangmi passes near Okinawa and later turns north or northeast, Kyushu could eventually see:
✔️ Higher humidity
✔️ Increased rain chances
✔️ Gusty winds
✔️ Rougher coastal waters
At this time, there is no indication of a direct threat to Kyushu.
🗾 Southern Japan Beyond Kyushu
Forecast confidence drops significantly beyond five days.
Some computer models bring Jangmi closer to southern Japan.
Others keep it well offshore.
That's why meteorologists focus on trends, not exact forecast lines this far out.
💬 One Of The First Questions Already Showing Up...
"Hi, curious to know what the weather is like right now in Okinawa please 🙏 And what the forecast is looking like for the next week!"
It's a fair question.
The weather in Okinawa right now is actually pretty typical for late May—warm, humid, and tropical.
The bigger question is what happens next week.
The honest answer is that Okinawa currently has the highest chance in Japan of seeing impacts from Jangmi, but it's still too early to know exactly how significant those impacts may be.
🎯 BOTTOM LINE
🌀 Tropical Storm Jangmi continues strengthening.
🌀 Okinawa remains the area in Japan most likely to see impacts next week.
🌀 Forecast confidence remains low beyond five days.
🌀 Kyushu and the rest of southern Japan should continue monitoring future forecasts.
🌀 There is still no immediate threat to Japan.
📌 Weather Translator Tip
One of the first questions I always get is:
"Should I cancel my Okinawa vacation?"
My answer right now is no.
Over the years I've ridden out hurricanes and typhoons while traveling—from Cabo San Lucas and Cozumel to New Orleans and here in Japan.
One thing I've learned is that hotels and resorts in tropical destinations usually have very detailed storm plans and experienced staff.
If you're headed to Okinawa next week, now is a great time to contact your hotel or resort and ask about their typhoon procedures.
A well-built beachfront resort or vacation villa can actually become part of the adventure.
At least that's been my experience as a meteorologist. 😉
📌 Weather Translator Tip #2
As my meteorology professors and early news mentors used to remind me:
K.I.S.S. — Keep It Simple, Stupid.
Don't focus on one forecast track.
Don't focus on one weather app.
And definitely don't focus on internet comments.
Focus on the trend.
Right now, the trend is a strengthening tropical storm moving northwest through the Philippine Sea that could approach Okinawa sometime next week.

🌀 NEW TROPICAL DEPRESSION FORMS SOUTH OF OKINAWA
📍 Near Yap and Palau, more than 2,000 km (1,200+ miles) south of Okinawa.
❓ WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR OKINAWA, KYUSHU & SOUTHERN JAPAN?
🏝️ Right Now...
Honestly, not much.
The system remains far from Japan and poses no immediate threat.
🏝️ Okinawa
✔️ Highest chance of future impacts
✔️ Rough surf & rip currents possible
✔️ Heavy rain & gusty winds possible
✔️ Travel disruptions possible
🌋 Kyushu
✔️ Too early to know
✔️ No immediate threat
✔️ Monitoring closely
🗾 Southern Japan
✔️ High uncertainty
✔️ Some forecasts bring it closer to Japan
✔️ Others keep it offshore
🎯 BOTTOM LINE
🌀 A tropical depression has formed.
🌀 Strengthening into a tropical storm—and possibly a typhoon—appears likely.
🌀 Okinawa is the area in Japan most likely to be affected if current trends continue.
🌀 Kyushu and the rest of southern Japan should simply monitor future forecasts.
📌 Weather Translator Tip: Don't focus on the exact forecast track yet. Focus on the trend.

🚨 JAPAN TSUNAMI ALERTS DOWNGRADED — BUT WHY KYUSHU IS DIFFERENT
A powerful earthquake
(M7.4–7.7) struck off Japan’s Sanriku coast—one of the most tsunami-prone regions in the country.
Alerts have now been downgraded, but evacuations were still advised in parts of northern Japan.
📍 So what about here in Kyushu?
This is actually one of the reasons I chose to base myself in Fukuoka…
➡️ Northeast Japan (like Sanriku) sits directly on a major subduction zone
➡️ That’s where Japan’s largest earthquakes + tsunamis originate
➡️ It’s open to the Pacific → nothing blocking wave energy
🌏 Kyushu is different:
✔️ Not directly on that same Pacific megathrust
✔️ More influenced by inland fault systems
✔️ Hakata Bay is shallow and semi-enclosed, which helps reduce tsunami impact
But here’s the part that matters most—
⚠️ Lower risk is NOT no risk
Kyushu has seen major earthquakes before (Kumamoto 2016), and inland shaking can still be significant.
💡 The real difference is the TYPE of risk: • Northeast Japan → Big tsunami + megathrust earthquakes
• Kyushu → Inland quakes, heavy rain, flooding, landslides
—
🧭 BOTTOM LINE Fukuoka/Kyushu is generally a lower tsunami risk region compared to northeastern Japan…
…but staying prepared still matters—just for different hazards.
—
