"From a NATO partnership perspective, the Pacific matters not because NATO seeks to expand into the region, but because the security challenges affecting the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific theatres are becoming increasingly interconnected.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine demonstrated that security crises in one region have global consequences. Likewise, developments in the Indo-Pacific have implications far beyond Asia. This is why NATO has deepened engagement with its Indo-Pacific Partners—the IP4 of Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and the Republic of Korea.
Three of these partners are Pacific Rim nations with deep historical, political, and economic ties to the Pacific Islands region.
The Pacific is no longer peripheral.
It is increasingly central." ##rigastratcomdialogue @PacSecurityHub
Europe should engage Pacific nations. Not invasively, and respecting their culture. Rather in a manner that benefits both sides. The region is very important for NATO if they want to avoid further fracturing".

A fantastic few days at the Shangri-La Dialogue representing the @PacSecurityHub (PRSH) and meeting with many of the delegations. A highlight was having the opportunity to meet with the President of Timor-Leste HE Dr José Ramos-Horta who I worked for many years ago in Dili. One of worlds true elder statesmen.
Thank you #IISS for the invitation to participate in #SLD2026.
I am looking forward to speaking at the #RigaStratComDialogue in two weeks! Thank you NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence for the invitation to speak on the inaugural Pacific security panel!

MEDIA RELEASE: Forum Leaders Invoke Biketawa Declaration
8th May, 2026
Suva, Fiji- Pacific Islands Forum Leaders have invoked the Biketawa Declaration to support a coordinated regional response to the emerging energy crisis affecting the Pacific region.
Reaffirming Leaders commitment to act decisively and collectively in anticipation of worsening global conditions as the crisis in the Middle-East continues to disrupt fuel supply chains, Leaders have recognised the value in early-positioning and preparing the region to respond in a coordinated and effective manner to the emerging energy crisis.
A coordinated member-led regional response mechanism will strengthen regional coordination, support timely decision-making, and help safeguard economic stability and essential services across the Pacific.

In the global narcotics trade, transnational criminal networks are consolidating their hold on the Pacific drug highway. Technology is enabling these networks to adapt and refine tactics to evade detection in the region, resulting in a trafficking system that is distributed and resilient.
“Technology is making the Pacific’s drug highway harder to detect” https://t.co/QjwqnNY7JJ
Pleased to see these discussions progressing. Regional delegates at the @PacSecurityHub "Securing the Pacific" Roundtable 30-31 March called for the invoking of the Biketawa and a coordinated Pacific bloc (including Aus/NZ) in response to the energy crisis. See my article below
Pleased to see ongoing coverage of Transnational Organised Crime and drug trafficking in the Pacific. Thanks ABC for the opportunity to give my analysis. #TNOC#drugs@AnnaPowles@PacSecurityHub https://t.co/0nmaY8Fv0m
“Without fuel, the Pacific stops." Important article by @FinancialTimes on the fuel crisis in the Pacific with comments from @JLSousaSantos and @MikeCoppage1 and on the ground reporting in Tuvalu. https://t.co/aEgI2TD6Ag
@JLSousaSantos writes: "In response to the current instability, a roundtable was convened by the University of Canterbury’s Pacific Regional Security Hub in March 2026 in Suva, bringing together Pacific government ministers and officials, diplomats and representatives from industry, civil society and academia. As one participant observed, ‘global instability is no longer external to the Pacific. It is transmitted through interconnected systems’." https://t.co/QIctf3sLMe
Pleased to provide comments to the ABC on Pacific's collective response to the energy crisis and to draw on the discussions and recommendations from the "Securing the Pacific" Roundtable that we hosted in Suva 3 weeks ago to discuss these very issues.
