I was pleased to receive in audience the Vice President of the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation (EUROJUST), Mr José de la Mata Amaya, who was accompanied by representatives of EUROJUST and the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (EUROPOL) at the Commission's headquarters in Abuja.

Our engagement provided an important opportunity to discuss the intersection of data protection, judicial cooperation, and law enforcement, particularly in an increasingly interconnected digital environment.

Mr Amaya and his team commended the NDPC for the remarkable progress recorded within its relatively short period of existence. They also shared insights into EUROJUST’s role in supporting judicial cooperation and coordination in criminal matters, as well as an ongoing EUROJUST-EUROPOL project focused on strengthening information exchange, evidence sharing, and coordinated criminal investigations.

A key area of discussion was the sharing and processing of personal data by national security and law enforcement agencies. I emphasised that while effective information sharing is essential to combating crime, the processing of personal data in this context is highly sensitive and must be subject to appropriate safeguards.

International cooperation is essential to addressing modern security challenges. Equally important is ensuring that such cooperation is built on strong data protection principles, safeguards, and respect for fundamental rights.

At the NDPC, we work closely with security and law enforcement institutions across Nigeria, providing guidance on the lawful processing and protection of personal data. We also support investigations and judicial proceedings involving data protection and contribute to capacity-building initiatives for relevant institutions.

The meeting concluded with a productive technical session involving officials from the NDPC, EUROJUST, and EUROPOL.
