Despite public support from @NC_Governor and a furious fight by @SenatorBerger and the NC Senate, sources are telling us that House Speaker @DestinHall wouldn't budge on baseball in the budget.

But it's NOT OVER just yet.

The stadium funding plan proposed by the Senate was the best chance in HISTORY for the state to become an inevitable choice to land an MLB expansion or relocation team.

The rest of the framework was built so that personal taxes were untouched and everything was funded from gambling taxes, player salary taxes, tourism taxes, and a new tax on the eventual stadium district that would capture revenue and use it to fund itself.

The allocation of funds would be FULLY contingent on landing an MLB team. If our market were not granted a team, the money would go back into the fund.

The setup was perfect and would have vaulted Raleigh into FRONT RUNNER status for MLB expansion. It would have also opened the door for the relocation of the Tampa Bay Rays, whose stadium deal is close to falling apart.

💵Landing a team would have kicked off a $3 Billion private investment into North Carolina from the team's ownership group (expansion fee + team).

𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒄𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒅𝒐𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒕 𝒏𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒍 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒔𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒅.

🗳️However, after budgets are agreed upon, there are days' worth of voting that go on by 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐋𝐎𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐒.

Yesterday, @WRAL reporter @murphsturph broke the news that there is a fully fleshed-out, Senate-led proposal to fund an MLB stadium if North Carolina were to be selected.

Their goal is to have that in this coming budget, and there is a strong consensus across party lines, but the NC House is hoping to block it.

We’ve kept quiet on this out of respect for the Rays situation, but North Carolina has been preparing for an opportunity for the Rays relocation for years now, and the window of opportunity is just about to open.

Want proof they’ve been prepping? WRAL just ran an article last week where they said this…

"His office (Treasurer Brad Briner) had conversations about the MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays before they were sold to a Florida group and said his office will be a part of conversations about a MLB expansion franchise “whenever it is appropriate to do so.”

And those weren’t the only conversations happening.

However, MLB was able to find a buyer for the Rays, and over the past year, they’ve been trying to get done what the former owner couldn’t.

And they’re finding themselves in a very familiar situation. Two sides that can’t find a way forward.

The Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency voted two weeks ago to delay consideration of a non-binding memorandum of understanding tied to the proposed Tampa Bay Rays stadium project until at least August.

This comes on the heels of the Tampa Sports Authority drawing a letter urging county leaders to prioritize the Buccaneers stadium renovation plans over the potential Rays Stadium.

And that came on the heels of Florida potentially doing away with property taxes, which Tampa’s Chief Financial Officer Dennis Rogero Jr said would be “catastrophic” to the Rays stadium deal.

On top of all that, their lease at Tropicana Field is up in 2028, and they have not yet requested an extension to that lease.

That leaves a situation where the Rays and MLB are crunched for time. They can’t play this game forever.
