Lewis Hamilton’s Singapore strategy unravelled in three stages.

Why start on mediums? Why stop so early? And why stay out when the Virtual Safety Car offered a cheaper second stop?

Hamilton accepted responsibility afterwards. But understanding the result means looking at the whole sequence.

1. Ferrari split its strategy to challenge Verstappen.

Leclerc started on softs, while Hamilton started P3 on a new set of mediums. Lewis explained that he wanted to extend his opening stint and make a one-stop strategy work.

That gave Ferrari two different ways to approach the race. Leclerc could apply pressure early, while Hamilton’s alternative tyre strategy offered flexibility over the timing of his stop.

The potential advantage depended on the medium allowing Lewis to stay competitive for longer. Once that tyre failed to deliver, Ferrari had to change direction.

Hamilton’s explanation:

2. The tyre picture was unusually uncertain.

Vasseur said teams had limited information about the relative performance of the medium and soft. FP1 running had focused on the hard compound, while the wet Sprint denied them the dry long-run comparison they would normally have gained.

According to Vasseur, Ferrari kept both one-stop and two-stop options available from the beginning.

The medium proved weaker than the soft, so Hamilton’s early switch was an attempt to recover performance. It also left him facing a much longer remaining distance on his next set of tyres.

From that point, making one stop work became a more demanding proposition.

Vasseur’s assessment, reported by RACER:

3. The VSC became the decisive moment.

Ferrari called both drivers into the pits. Hamilton said he missed the pit entry, then chose to continue and protect track position.

That distinction matters. Missing the initial opportunity and deciding to stay out afterwards were separate parts of the sequence.

Vasseur believed a double stop would have preserved a P2-P3 finish. That is Ferrari’s assessment of the alternative, rather than a result we can prove would definitely have happened.

Instead, Hamilton’s ageing softs left him exposed. Antonelli, Norris and Piastri passed him, and a potential podium became P6.

Vasseur’s comments to F1 TV and Sky:
https://t.co/sDtsU6LRo8

My reading: the weak opening stint reduced Hamilton’s strategic flexibility, and the later decision to defend track position left too little tyre performance to finish the job.

Lewis owned that decision. The useful question now is how Ferrari and Hamilton improve the information and communication behind the next split-second call.

@simscircuit A gamble that failed, not a lack of fight. Respect for owning the call, Lewis. Take the lesson to Austin, but leave the self-blame in Singapore ❤️

@fiagirly You tried to change the outcome, not settle for it. The call didn’t work, but the fight was there. Keep your head up, Lewis. We’re backing you for Austin ❤️
