@sinead_ryan In the UK they have something similar. EVs don’t have to pay congestion charges in London. Maybe plans are afoot to bring in congestion charges?
@RugbyPhilBB@CardiffRugbyWeb Maybe it’s a ‘we need to tighten our belts’ type of play but top players are not having any of it. I suppose we’ll see when/if the deal lands
@CardiffRugbyWeb As I said we are second guessing unless we get a split by URC and European revenues, and any explanations for variances, for instance if a team had a run etc.
My gut is that the European revenues have decreased but can’t give you any definite proof.
@CardiffRugbyWeb There were further format changes in 2017 and in 2020. Less pool games now 4 instead of 6. There were more changes in 2023. Less games for the less competitive teams which usually are the Italian and Welsh teams. Designed purposefully by the Eng & Fra teams so they got more €/£
@CardiffRugbyWeb This would need to be split between URC and European competitions. I suspect the decrease is in European competitions 1) changes to the competition structure means less money is going to URC teams and more to English & French teams 2) welsh teams have been less competitive
@CardiffRugbyWeb Do any of the Welsh clubs publish their financial statements? It would be easy to see it from there. I know Ulster Rugby does. Should be easy enough to see if there has been increased revenues since the expansion of URC
@CardiffRugbyWeb I really don’t think we are. Sure there are some significant issues with the URC but I’d say the same about the Prem. The SA teams increase the standard and increase TV revenues.
@CardiffRugbyWeb I don’t think you understand the Irish model if you think the IRFU have intervened to prevent collapse.
I really think joining the Prem will hasten the Welsh teams demise but best of luck if you think otherwise
@LarryHockett88 @TelegraphRugby@GavinMairs @CRichardsonTel Genuinely love playing the SA and ITA teams as a Leinster fan. Wouldn’t be keen to join a league with the english teams as they will want to tinker with it in their favour when things don’t go their way, making a balls of it. Just see the Champions Cup.
@CardiffRugbyWeb Which is what the RFU hybrid central contracts will be. Also tv revenues for the URC are €63m per year versus €39m for the prem. You’d be less likely to go to the wall playing in the URC. But if you really want to go then fair enough.
@rugbyexpansion I’d be surprised if it happens. Both the Welsh and English need money - imo I don’t think an AW league would make sufficient money to keep you guys afloat. But best of luck if you do go with it!
@TerracerSouth The English clubs are fooked. They only want to merge with the Scots & Irish to keep them afloat. I strongly suspect they have no interest in an AW league as you guys have no money.
