And somewhere, I suspect, my younger self would still ask the same question at the end of the class:
“Is there boondi today?”
(Well there’s Biriyani instead - it’s Sunday after all 😉)
Perhaps that, too, is a reminder—not to take life, work or even spirituality so seriously that we forget to enjoy the little things along the way.
When I was growing up, my ambitious parents had a rather ambitious plan for me too.
Every Sunday, they would try to send me to a “free” Bhagavad Gita class.
I would go, but let’s just say my enthusiasm was somewhat limited. I would sit through the class half-heartedly, waiting for the one part of the Sunday experience that truly had my undivided attention—the ‘Prasadam’ (snacks) at the end.
And so, decades after those Sunday Gita classes that I attended primarily for the sweet boondi from Triplicane, I find myself returning to the same wisdom with very different ears.
My parents may have thought they were giving me a religious education.
Perhaps, unknowingly, they were giving me something far more useful for life.
