#GardensElem Week 6 Q2: Making sure that children receive a high quality education is clearly complicated. I am optimistic though that dedicated educators will continue to try to understand what is needed to improve teaching and learning to set all students up for success.
#GardensElem Week6 Q1: Reading instruction and writing instruction should support each other. Together, they can improve students’ comprehension of content and enable them to analyze text and connect and retain information, closing the learning gap.
#GardensElem Week 5 Q1: As children learn the skills of literacy, teachers provide support with vocab, background knowledge, and comprehension questions on students’ instructional levels. As reading levels increase, students need less support from teachers to gain knowledge.
#GardensElem Week 2 Q2 Part 2: I think the foundation that Hirsch created to produce the Core Knowledge Sequence with input from professors, parents, teachers, and a multicultural committee is a better idea than creating a list because it reflects more diverse views.
#GardensElem Book Study Week 4 Q2: Hirsch’s work has helped build knowledge in elementary grades by showing that well written text, students’ familiarity with the topic, and multicultural literature all impact comprehension.
#GardensElem Week4 Q1: Limiting learning to topics of interest would put students with fewer experiences at a disadvantage. Fortunately, most elem students are interested in learning about their world. Teaching ELAR through science and ss helps even the learning field.
#GardensElem Book Study Week 3 Q2: Teachers can be key to improving the outcomes of low-income students when they have the materials, training, and ongoing guidance and support needed to meet students’ needs.
#GardensElem Book Study Week 3 Q1: I agree that the scripts themselves are not the problem. They often help guide teachers’ instruction of skills and strategies, which when combined with opportunities to discuss, explore, and write about content help students gain knowledge.
#GardensElem Week 2 Q4: I went through an alternative teaching cert program and did not receive much phonics training. I have gotten PD in phonics over the years though, and I learned about the importance of providing systematic phonics instruction.
#GardensElem: Week 2 Q3: Proponents of whole-language and balanced literacy believe that it is not necessary to “drill phonics” because it does not help students make meaning of text. I do think that phonics is a necessary part of the reading instruction.
#GardensElem Week 2 Q2: I am aware of background knowledge that I am using when reading. Being familiar with the content helps me understand and enjoy reading so much more!
@TheLexRamirez I agree! I think the read aloud is a super important part of reading instruction. It improves vocabulary and fluency, provides background knowledge, allows teachers to think aloud to demonstrate skills “real time”, and helps children learn the joy of reading.
#GardensElem Week 2 Q1: Educators often think comprehension skills need to be taught explicitly, and they assume that phonics will occur naturally. Scientists say that decoding should be taught explicitly and that comprehension happens naturally with vocab and background info.
A principal recently told me that some parents don't want their kids "just reading" while at school. He asked what research he could share to show those parents that "just reading" has ACADEMIC benefits. Here it the chart I shared. #DisruptingThinking
