The exemption is reserved for the one job adulthood actually demands. Run the bank. Command the army. Sit on the Court. Preach at the nation. Cash the prestige. The second the bill comes due for a life she ended, created, neglected, or threw away, we discover this sudden porcelain fragility. Now she needs a 24-hour minder. Now the room fills with explanations so nobody has to say guilt out loud.

Adult status in this arrangement comes with the office, the salary, the vote, the title, and the megaphone. It comes with every privilege except the one thing adulthood requires: owning the goddamn wreckage.
