PAKISTAN: Sohrab Barkat, a journalist, was detained by Pakistani authorities last month for alleged criticism of state institutions online. Since then, he has been implicated in three separate cases under Pakistan’s cybercrime law.
Two cases were filed against him in August 2024 and 2025; he was never informed about them. Months later, on 26 November 2025, while trying to travel abroad, he was detained.
After receiving bail in one of the cases, he was arrested in relation to a third case.
📢 IHRF STATEMENT | PRESS FREEDOM UNDER ATTACK
The International Human Rights Foundation (IHRF) expresses grave concern over the continued arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and judicial harassment of Pakistani Kashmiri journalist Sohrab Barkat.
Mr. Barkat was abducted from Islamabad airport, unlawfully transferred to Lahore, and has since been booked in multiple fabricated FIRs — all after Pakistani authorities officially informed the Islamabad High Court that no inquiry or case existed against him and that he was free to travel.
🔴 His “offences” include:
• Conducting a journalistic interview
• Editing and reporting news content
• Covering peaceful protests in Azad Kashmir
• Reporting on political dissent and human rights issues
🔴 Key facts raising serious alarm:
▪️ Detained without due process and denied timely court production
▪️ Repeated remands without clear charges
▪️ FIRs surfacing sequentially to block bail
▪️ Denial of family and legal access
▪️ Judicial reluctance to hear his case
▪️ Clear violation of Pakistan’s constitutional guarantees and international obligations
Sohrab Barkat is an accredited UNFCCC journalist, invited by the Government of Brazil to cover COP30 in Belém, and a respected reporter known for professional, evidence-based journalism. His detention appears aimed solely at silencing independent media and deterring critical reporting.
📌 His case has already drawn concern from:
• The European Union Mission to Pakistan
• The UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion & Expression
• The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)
• Pakistan’s senior judiciary and civil society
The IHRF calls for:
✔️ Immediate release of Sohrab Barkat
✔️ Withdrawal of all fabricated cases
✔️ Independent investigation into his abduction and mistreatment
✔️ An end to systematic targeting of journalists in Pakistan
A journalist’s duty is to question power—not submit to it. Criminalising journalism is a direct assault on democracy and human dignity.
🕊️ Journalism is not a crime. Free Sohrab Barkat.
