Big Capital in an Unequal World: The Micropolitics of Wealth in Pakistan by Rosita Armytage
An intriguing insight into the lives of 'elite' and deeply engrained methods of elite capture and gatekeeping in the country.

This says it all. No reduction in emissions will happen to meet Paris goals with these entrenched mindsets. Countries like Pakistan will continue to hurtle into a red shadow of heat-induced changes to everything while not contributing to the 🔥 burn. The Earth 🌍 will become a red planet on current trajectories of 2.8 C not 1.5 C if this continues

Once you scratch the surface of the Taliban's propaganda, there is nothing at all "traditional" or "national" about their movement.
The Taliban is an utterly modern movement, mostly based on 20th-century political ideas and foreign religious teachings.

"Pakistani nationals were also kept below deck, with crew members maltreating them when they appeared in search of fresh water or tried to escape" this story makes you want to weep https://t.co/EawGam2DF2
Rosita Armytage’s ‘Big Capital in an Unequal World: the Micropolitics of Wealth in Pakistan’ is worth reading to learn about the specific behaviour of Pakistan’s elites in terms of consolidating wealth & keeping others out - available in local bookstores in paperback:
Championing 'the cause of civil liberties' is precisely why he's been abducted.
The military has never tolerated dissent. What it wants is the freedom to act with impunity against all who speak against it. The victims may change, the logic does not.
The abduction of Nasir - who strongly criticised the campaign of enforced disappearances targeting PTI, but spoke equally vehemently during Imran Khan's tenure as PM - appears to point to a widening of the the military's crackdown on dissent to those not affiliated w/ the party.
If you look at family links, connections, and partnerships, you'll be amazed at how much the current political instability, in some ways, is also a struggle among Lahore's elite.
Chap strength lies in its profound examination of colonial political economy, & how the first group of business elite merged & flourished by linking merchant economies with the British war effort while also establishing relations with Indian Muslim traders & professionals. 3/
Organizing her second chapter around competition, conflict & cooperation Dr. @PakRosi articulated a fascinating historical account of the 🇵🇰 "elite class" from the colonial times to the contemporary. 1/ @LibertyBooks_
