James says "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” Simply put, do something for your faith to keep it alive, those things as minute as they may be, are needed for your faith to work.

[Catholic Arena @CatholicArena]

Joseph Ratzinger was elected as pope on 19th April 2005

A day before his election, he delivered one of his most famous and prophetic speeches

Coining the phrase 'Dictatorship of Relativism', he predicted how the West would see relativists imposing their will on those who had traditional beliefs

It is a compelling and very powerful read, especially in light of recent events in the West:

'How many winds of doctrine have we known in recent decades, how many ideological currents, how many ways of thinking. The small boat of the thought of many Christians has often been tossed about by these waves - flung from one extreme to another: from Marxism to liberalism, even to libertinism; from collectivism to radical individualism; from atheism to a vague religious mysticism; from agnosticism to syncretism and so forth. Every day new sects spring up, and what St Paul says about human deception and the trickery that strives to entice people into error (cf. Eph 4: 14) comes true.

Today, having a clear faith based on the Creed of the Church is often labeled as fundamentalism. Whereas relativism, that is, letting oneself be "tossed here and there, carried about by every wind of doctrine", seems the only attitude that can cope with modern times. We are building a dictatorship of relativism that does not recognize anything as definitive and whose ultimate goal consists solely of one's own ego and desires.

We, however, have a different goal: the Son of God, the true man. He is the measure of true humanism. An "adult" faith is not a faith that follows the trends of fashion and the latest novelty; a mature adult faith is deeply rooted in friendship with Christ. It is this friendship that opens us up to all that is good and gives us a criterion by which to distinguish the true from the false, and deceit from truth.

We must develop this adult faith; we must guide the flock of Christ to this faith. And it is this faith - only faith - that creates unity and is fulfilled in love.

On this theme, St Paul offers us as a fundamental formula for Christian existence some beautiful words, in contrast to the continual vicissitudes of those who, like children, are tossed about by the waves: make truth in love. Truth and love coincide in Christ. To the extent that we draw close to Christ, in our own lives too, truth and love are blended. Love without truth would be blind; truth without love would be like "a clanging cymbal" (I Cor 13: 1).

Let us now look at the Gospel, from whose riches I would like to draw only two small observations. The Lord addresses these wonderful words to us: "I no longer speak of you as slaves.... Instead, I call you friends" (Jn 15: 15). We so often feel, and it is true, that we are only useless servants (cf. Lk 17: 10).

Yet, in spite of this, the Lord calls us friends, he makes us his friends, he gives us his friendship. The Lord gives friendship a dual definition. There are no secrets between friends: Christ tells us all that he hears from the Father; he gives us his full trust and with trust, also knowledge. He reveals his face and his heart to us. He shows us the tenderness he feels for us, his passionate love that goes even as far as the folly of the Cross. He entrusts himself to us, he gives us the power to speak in his name: "this is my body...", "I forgive you...". He entrusts his Body, the Church, to us'

DEAR ZAMBIANS.

History is barely wrong.

Zambia is one of the few countries where the native people vigorously opposed their own leaders for fighting for Independence.

Most of their freedom fighters were hosted, educated and trained in Ghana on how to emancipate their people and gain independence. In fact the penultimate meeting by the respected Keneth Kaunda before his Independence march was held in Accra. The facts are there.

But it seems the long walk to freedom has had little effect on consciousness, for many.

Some of you have a remarkable talent for being unenlightened.

If the Malay President visited Korea in an attire strange to Koreans, they’d simply make use of the internet to acquire new information and NOT ridicule.

But I understand the difficulty also, that the lack of internet access therefore, in many places in Zambia.

It is two thousand and twenty six years plus two months of growth. Not a time to belittle another African of their culture, especially for a country that has no history of “friendly banter” with us. Sorry we are only on that accord, with Nigeria.

Fortunately, Ghana signed a visa free agreement with your country yesterday. Just like your foremost leaders, we invite as Zambians, from Kitwe to Chingola to Chipata and the Copperbelt to visit Ghana and learn.

To learn about Africa. To learn about heritage. To learn that a suit and tie is rather stranger to the continent, not Fugu.

To learn why Ghana became the first subsaharan country to gain Independence, and subsequently hold the hands of the likes of Zambia to walk same path.

And more importantly, to learn why Kwame Nkrumah, the man named after one of the topmost Universities in Zambia, embarked on a journey, seventy years ago, to cure the sort of ignorance exhibited yesterday.

There’s a reason past and present Ghanaian leaders rock the Fugu even on the biggest international stages without apology.

We ARE proud and we ARE an example of how to be African. We preserve and protect our history.

For instance if we shared borders with Zimbabwe, we would have owned the Victoria, and not lose it to them. Agreed?

Now, you can place an order for Fugu, our culturally significant garment from Ghana and will be delivered to you anywhere in the world.

From Accra via the Black Star line.

Suppose that once a week, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to £100.

If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.

The fifth would pay £1.

The sixth would pay £3.

The seventh would pay £7.

The eighth would pay £12.

The ninth would pay £18.

And the tenth man (the richest) would pay £59.

So, that’s what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every week and seemed quite happy with the arrangement until, one day, the owner caused them a little problem.

“Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your weekly beer by £20.”

Drinks for the ten men would now cost just £80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes.

So the first four men were unaffected.

They would still drink for free but what about the other six men?

The paying customers? How could they divide the £20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share?

They realized that £20 divided by six is £3.33, but if they subtracted that from everybody’s share then not only would the first four men still be drinking for free but the fifth and sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.

So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fairer to reduce each man’s bill by a higher percentage.

They decided to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

And so, the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (a 100% saving).

The sixth man now paid £2 instead of £3 (a 33% saving).

The seventh man now paid £5 instead of £7 (a 28% saving).

The eighth man now paid £9 instead of £12 (a 25% saving).

The ninth man now paid £14 instead of £18 (a 22% saving).

And the tenth man now paid £49 instead of £59 (a 16% saving).

Each of the last six was better off than before with the first four continuing to drink for free.

But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings. “I only got £1 out of the £20 saving,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, “but he got £10!“

“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a £1 too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!”

“That’s true!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get £10 back, when I only got £2? The wealthy get all the breaks!”

“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison, “we didn’t get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!”

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next week the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him.

But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important – they didn’t have enough money between all of them to pay for even half of the bill!

And that’s how it works.

Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy and they just might not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

For those who understand, no explanation is needed.

For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible.

What’s holding Africans back? President Kagame asked.

Prof. Murigande told Kagame that the main reason is that African leaders don’t care about their people. They seek to enrich themselves — to eat, and to eat alone. The president agreed with him, but he pressed further, asking why this problem seems peculiar to Africa.

Kagame doesn’t ask rhetorical questions. He has identified a problem and is involving Rwandans in finding a solution.

Here’s my take:

To overcome challenges like those faced by postcolonial societies, a people must rediscover a sense of collective self-worth. Usually, this comes from the memory of their past achievements— who they were as a people informs who they are and who they aspire to be.

While Africa was not the only region to experience colonization, it is one of the few where colonialism either erased the memory of past greatness or created new countries with no shared memory of such greatness.

Colonisation captured African minds. In that sense, although Africa was colonised last, it was colonised the worst.

Colonial education deepened this alienation, distorting African aspirations, turning them from collective to individual.

In the 1950s, the small group of “educated” African elites aspired to join the white world : the colonial administration. Today, with colonial education still intact and keeping African minds in chains, the elites it creates do not aspire to uplift their people; they aspire to join the global elite. They don’t seek to improve their own societies; they seek to escape from them.

Accordingly, these elites measure their self-worth by:

•how fluently they speak foreign languages,
•which foreign schools they send their children to,
•which foreign hospitals they can afford,
•how many houses they build, and how much money they invest abroad.

At the heart of this lies a quiet acceptance that Africans are somehow defective as a people, and that the only way to succeed is individually. Even those who once believed they could change things often abandon the quest for collective improvement once they grasp the scale of the effort it demands.

The kind of heavy lifting required for real transformation breeds a sense of hopelessness, one that pushes people from collective ambition toward individual greed.

So, the individual’s aspiration becomes to join the global bourgeoisie. But these are strategies of self-evacuation. They are attempts to flee backwardness by moving from the rural village to the capital, then on to the enlightened colonial metropolis, and ultimately to disappear into cosmopolitan anonymity - a form of self erasure rather than a search for self restoration.

This journey became the measure of progress. Those who remain in Africa do so with one foot already out (through dual citizenship or close connections to the representatives of their desired metropoles) for themselves, and especially for their children.

Although Kagame brings up this topic, it has been a theme he turns to whenever he notices that some ethic is creeping in amongst the leaders, only that this time he is more specific.

For example, while he has been teaching agaciro as a form of mental decolonization, most people over the years understood agaciro merely as a material pursuit.

Yet agaciro is, at its core, about retracing and reclaiming the memory of self-worth and therefore the basis for collective pursuit.

Just a little over eight months out of office, and suddenly the state institutions they once trusted and defended can no longer be trusted. Just a little over eight months in office, and the institutions they previously distrusted now look completely reliable. This only confirms how both parties use state institutions to do their bidding once in power. And if you point that out, their supporters are up in arms 🤣

Saint Augustine too had a restless youth, but he did not settle for less, did not silence the cry of his heart. He sought the truth that does not disappoint, and the beauty that does not fade. By following the one who had always been his friend. #JubileeofYouth
