Congratulations to Sol Plaatje Municipality for approving the R3.6 billion budget in an orderly Council Meeting. What should follow now is accelerated service delivery.

The theme for the budget is "Rebuilding Sol Plaatje Together". These are the major highlights:
1. Electricity: At Galeshewe Substation, a new transformer is to be installed worth R25 million to avoid the risk of depending on one transformer. More households are to be connected to the grid in Platfontein, Tshwaragano, Lerato Park, and Marikana. Fifteen (15) high-mast lights are being installed across the municipal jurisdiction in fostering public safety.
2. Sanitation: Diamond Park's sanitation woes, which also impacted other nearby areas, are currently being addressed through the installation of a new sewer pipeline worth R14 million in what is part of the Beaconsfield Sewer Network Refurbishments. Sewer upgrades are to be undertaken in Lerato Park whilst for Madiba Park, an amount of R10 million has been set aside. The completion of the Carters Glen Pump Station has also been allocated for.
3. Roads and Stormwater: A total of 55 000 square metres of road are to be resealed, and a large number of storm water canals are to be improved significantly.

In addition, the municipality has applied for a grant of R2.8 billion to address its sanitation challenges.

On other key-issues:
1. Electricity Tarriff increase, the municipality is below the Eskom approved 8.7% and will live with a deficit of over R105 million.
2. In demonstrating that it is a pro-poor municipality, the Expansion of Indigent Support translates into widening the net by accommodating additional vulnerable households in shifting from a monthly income of under R4500 to R6000.

This budget is indeed an investment in our people's dignity and their future.
