Such a great opportunity to present our recent work on identifying past slip-to-the-trench earthquakes at the Japan Trench @LamontEarth in New York. Thanks for having me MPG and Cecilia McHugh for the invite.
8 weeks at sea on DV Chikyu done and dusted. What an experience! Seeing/touching/crushing/melting rocks from the entire subduction zone has been truly mindblowing. Can't wait to see all the cool science to come out of IODP405! Now for a big ol' rest.

11/23 (Sat) Core bits drill with a hole in the center to collect cylindrical cores. These are the #coresamples.
The lower part of the chert layer was tough; core bit was badly gouged out & unrecognizable 😱💦

These episodes occur only when coseismic coastal deformation is recorded. The combined patterns of vertical deformation and shaking indicate some earthquakes occurred on upper plate faults, while others must have involved seismic slip on the weakly-coupled plate interface.
Finally! Our paper combining onshore-offshore paleoseismic records on the central Hikurangi margin is out in QSR! Super proud of this one.

We present a new record of submarine turbidites from four distinct distributary systems across 175 km of the margin. High-res 14C and age-depth modelling reveals several episodes of co-temporal triggering in the last 7kyr.
