@DrFrankTurek@RobSchneider You should also listen to your mentor on how he believed equating the US with God's Kingdom was idolatry. He would be warning of the dangers of Christian nationalism if he were alive.
@havivrettiggur The government in Israel loves the settler violence and will always allow them to kill with impunity. You don't care about the violence you just don't like the optics.
@howertonjosh Jesus kept critical distance from Rome, not devotion. So we must hold the US to prophetic accountability, not nationalism, measured by its care for the most vulnerable.
@thetamarisktree@howertonjosh I get this response a lot. Here's how I see it. The Beatitudes invert worldly power and socialism is the political scaffolding to make that inversion materially real. It turns "love thy neighbor" into economic structure, not just personal charity.
@howertonjosh@JimmyScroggins Patriotism means holding the country accountable to its own highest aspirations. Nationalism ignores the gap and celebrates the country as it is, flaws and all, often claiming superiority to avoid self-critique.
@DrFrankTurek Patriotism means loving our ideals and values while actually living by them, and nationalism comes from a belief that our country is superior to others and views it as great regardless of whether it upholds those values.
@reachem@Brcremer Patriotism means loving our ideals and values while actually living by them, whereas nationalism comes from a belief that our country is superior to others and that it is great regardless of whether it upholds those values.
@howertonjosh@america I hope American Christians learn the difference between patriotism, which means loving our ideals and values while actually living by them, and nationalism, that comes from a belief that our country is superior to others and views it as great regardless if it upholds those values
@brianshelley@howertonjosh Honestly, given what I've seen from a lot of powerful Christians in this country, I'm not convinced they wouldn't use the Bible to justify the same kinds of injustices all over again.
