Professor/Chair of the Dept of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at BCM. Using structural and molecular biology to answer the big questions since 1991.
We rarely question buffers — maybe we should.
In a recent study from our lab, we show that phosphate inhibits KPC-2, underestimating enzyme activity and inhibitor potency.
Great work @DigniteN 👏 Go check it out 👇

Long overdue shoutout to
@paoriverat, a second-year graduate student in Dr. Palzkill Lab, for earning a competitive Molecular Basis of Infectious Diseases (MBID) training grant.
Congratulations to Michael A. Lopez, a second-year graduate student in the Palzkill Lab, for being awarded the Training Interdisciplinary Pharmacology Scientists Program (TIPS) predoctoral fellowship! Your hard work and dedication are truly commendable.
🎓🌟 Big shout out to Dr. @postdoctorallie , Dr. Lynn Su, and Dr. Jane Park, former lab graduates, who rocked the stage at the recent hooding ceremony, donning their well-deserved hooding hats! 🎩👏 Keep shining bright, champs! 💫 #Graduation#BCM
Check out our latest publication in PNAS about using large-scale deep mutational scanning to study epistatic interactions in an enzyme active site.
Great work done by @itsDrAllie.

50,000+ enzyme variants tested. A new catalytic mechanism. A highly interconnected, substrate-dependent network of amino acid interactions discovered. Blood, sweat, tears (mine). This story has it all, folks: https://t.co/9d8zvAOpDN

Some work by my labmates @PalzkillLabBCM that I helped with during my PhD went live over the holidays! We used DNA-encoded libraries to find highly potent inhibitors of two prominent carbapenemases, NDM-1 and OXA-48.

On another (totally unrelated…) note, the BCM graduate school application opens September 1st for those interested in continuing the legacy of these three newly-minted PhDs!

So happy to share this story and that I was able to play a small part in it! We discovered and validated highly potent small molecule inhibitors of the SARS-CoV-2 main protease, including variants that show resistance to current antiviral treatments.
