The Weight of the Classroom
The bell rings loud, a signal to start,
Another day where we give our heart.
But behind the smiles and lessons we plan,
Lies the burden too heavy for one to withstand.
The mandates grow, the standards climb,
Yet we’re given no space, no extra time.
Curriculum shifts, expectations soar,
While our own well-being we can’t restore.
The papers pile, the emails sting,
The endless demands that each day brings.
The meetings stretch past the school-day’s end,
And nights are spent trying to mend.
Discipline spirals, the outbursts flare,
Children in pain, with no one to care.
We shoulder the weight of their hidden scars,
Trying to guide them to reach for stars.
Society’s blame, a relentless glare,
“You’re the problem—fix it, if you dare.”
We fight for resources, we beg for aid,
But budgets cut dreams we’ve carefully laid.
The stress is endless, the tears unseen,
Caught between who we are and who we’ve been.
And yet, amidst the chaos and strife,
There’s something deeper that gives us life.
What Brings Us Back???
It’s the smile of a child, the light in their eyes,
The moment they see their own potential rise.
The “I get it!” whispered, the confidence gained,
The small victories from the effort sustained.
It’s the hug from a student who once felt lost,
Who now stands tall despite the cost.
The dreams they share, the hope they embrace,
The belief that the world is a kinder place.
It’s knowing your presence has made them feel seen,
That you’ve helped them envision what life can mean.
Though the weight is heavy, the path unclear,
It’s their courage and growth that keeps us here.
For in their success, we find our own,
In their love and dreams, the seeds we’ve sown.
And so, we return, hearts weary yet strong,
To build a world where they belong.
“That means doing things that aren’t always easy but what’s necessary. That requires fight. That requires perseverance. And eventually, we will finish the race and be able to say, as the Apostle Paul did, we have kept the faith.”
