Two labs moved the safety bar on the same Monday. One pulled a model. One pushed safeguards down a price tier.
Issue #26 is the writeup. The interesting part is that both moves changed what shipped.
Google is retiring Gemini Gems. Migration to skills starts Nov 17.
The persona goes. The instruction stays. If you built Gems, save the procedure. The character doesn't transfer.
Guide: On-Device vs Cloud Inference — the 2026 decision framework. Real numbers on latency, cost break-even points, privacy constraints, and model quality across 5 dimensions. No hand-waving.
Review: Baseten after two weeks of testing as a HuggingFace inference provider. Rating 3.8/5. Best-in-class speed and HF integration. The dedicated GPU bill is 4-6x raw rental though.
Tip: Cache your repeated context, not just your prompts. Most teams cache system prompts and stop there. The real savings are in tool schemas, RAG context, and few-shot examples — often 16x more tokens.
Skill spotlight: Defuddle for Hermes Agent. Extracts clean markdown from web pages before your agent reads them — strips nav, ads, boilerplate. Saves 3-5x tokens per page fetch.
New service in the Clearinghouse: Baseten. Serverless per-token Model APIs plus dedicated GPU deployments for open models. Now a HuggingFace inference provider. Fast, but the always-on GPU bill stings.
Added MiniCPM5-2B to the Clearinghouse LLM directory. OpenBMB's 2.5B on-device model — Apache 2.0, 131K context, highest Intelligence Index of any sub-4B open model. Runs on a phone.
Review: ComfyUI after months of daily use for brand visual production. Rating 4.2/5.
Where it shines: day-one support for every new image model (Flux, Qwen-Image, Z-Image, Hunyuan). Node graph gives real production control. API and MCP integration for agent pipelines. Every other image tool is a ComfyUI wrapper under the hood.
Where it hurts: steep learning curve, custom node dependency hell, no model management, DIY batch processing, VRAM is your problem.
For production image generation on your own GPU, this is the default. For casual use, look elsewhere.
Guide: Agent Plugins 1.0 — what the new packaging standard means for your stack.
Published August 2026 by Vercel, AWS, GitHub, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Google. A vendor-neutral directory format that bundles Agent Skills and MCP servers into one portable package.
Skills keep their existing format. MCP config uses a closed schema. One plugin loads across ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, VS Code, Hermes, and OpenClaw.
What it does not solve: permissions, registries, installation, updates. It is an interoperability floor, not a full platform.
Recipe: Deploy ComfyUI with Docker for local AI image generation.
Stand up ComfyUI in a Docker container on your own GPU. Unlimited image generation, no API bills, no per-image fees, no prompts leaving your machine.
Step-by-step: persistent directory structure, Docker image with GPU passthrough, model downloads (Flux.1, SDXL, Qwen-Image), verification, agent API integration via MCP server.
Intermediate difficulty, about 30 min. This is the setup SMF Works uses for all brand visual production.
Tip: Version your skills, not just your prompts.
Skills are code, not config. When a skill changes, your agent's behavior changes. If you cannot answer what was in the skill that ran this task, you are flying blind.
Put skills in git. Tag versions in frontmatter. Write commit messages that describe behavior change, not file change. Review skill diffs before they go live.
A skill change is a behavioral change to your agent. Treat it like code review.
Skill spotlight: Agent QA for Hermes Agent.
Natural-language browser and mobile tests that survive UI churn. Three skills: authoring tests, triaging failures from captured evidence (did the app break or did the test drift?), and applying scoped fixes.
The triage skill is the real cost saver. It reads screenshots, DOM snapshots, and network logs to tell you whether a failure is a real regression or a stale test — normally a 20-minute human task.
New service in the Clearinghouse: DeepInfra.
Usage-based inference cloud with OpenAI-compatible API. Some of the cheapest per-token pricing in the market. DeepSeek-V4-Flash at 0.08/0.18 per MTok, GLM-5.2 at 0.75/2.40, Nemotron 3 Ultra at 0.50/2.20.
What it does well: aggressive pricing, broad model catalog, OpenAI-compatible swap, GPU rental by the minute.
Honest limitations: no free tier, 200 concurrent request cap, no fine-tuning or training, US-only infra, no managed observability.
Added Nemotron 3 Ultra to the Clearinghouse LLM directory.
NVIDIA's 550B hybrid Mamba-Transformer MoE model — 55B active, 1M context, open weights under OpenMDW-1.1. Built for agentic reasoning and long-context orchestration.
Pricing: 0.50/2.20 per million tokens on DeepInfra. MMLU-Pro 86.8 pct, SWE-bench Verified 71.9 pct, RULER at 1M 94.7 pct.
Where it wins: long-horizon agent pipelines, cost-sensitive open-weight fleets.
Where it loses: pure coding agent work (Terminal-Bench 2.0 at 56.4 pct trails frontier), no vision, 2.57s TTFT.
