Many religious institutions kept streaming their services even after resuming in-person gatherings. Some pivoted back to mostly online during the Omicron surge.

That's meant multiple ways for congregants to participate and connect. But it also produced one of the most repugnant moments of the pandemic, when congregants at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, TX, saw their rabbi and others taken hostage during Shabbat service.
