On this day in 2014 ✨
Son Yeon-jae made history at the Asian Games in Incheon, winning the individual AA and becoming South Korea’s first-ever Asian Games champion in rhythmic gymnastics
Melnikova is preparing for the World Championships
“I decided to make myself really comfortable at the training camp. I brought a plushie, a whole suitcase of clothes, a desk lamp, candles and a blanket to make it cozy, plus some coloring books to keep me busy in the evenings.”

Someone who knows almost nothing about gymnastics actually asked me today: who is Ilya Zaika and what exactly makes his new element so difficult?
So I tried to explain
This USA selection roster really feels like a changing of the guard. Jade and Skye bring the Worlds experience, but so many of the serious contenders have never made a World team before
And honestly, describing it makes me realize how hard it is to explain elite gymnastics to someone who doesn’t follow the sport 😅
How would you explain what makes the Zaika so unique and difficult?
The Zaika is a strength element on rings: from an inverted hang, he lifts his body with straight arms into an inverted cross.
No swing to help him. Just strength and control, while keeping the rings and his entire body stable.
