@WillOestreich@Warren_Lab@MBARI_News Wow, that's not too far. And surprise surprise, it looks like there were some sperm whale sightings in Monterey Bay recently, after all...

Wishing the @UNBResearch + @DalhousieU + Ocean Alliance field team a safe, productive, #whale-filled #research trip aboard the FV JD Martin! They’ll be in the Gulf of St. Lawrence the next two weeks studying #rightwhales & their prey 🐋🌊🦐
Excited to share research from my @NSF postdoc, published last week in @EnvSciTech Letters. TLDR: baleen whales can teach us about #PFAS in marine food webs. These "forever chemicals" are widespread, and ecosystem sentinels are needed to monitor them 🌊🐋
A really nice documentary by @hakaimagazine about our bowhead whale study in Baffin Island; lead by @SFortuneSea and with many other contributors

I'm looking for recently-dispelled misconceptions about whale behavior. Something along the lines of how Aristotle though birds transformed into different species during the winter, or how in the middle ages people thought birds hibernated in frozen lakes. @bluewhalenews
We also have a new paper out in @J_Exp_Biol on the spinning performance of leaping cetaceans. Led by the inimitable Frank Fish.

#Whales that prefer #zooplankton over fish have wider nostril spacing, which may better-equip them to sniff-out zooplankton. Read "Morphology of nares associated with stereo-olfaction in baleen whales" - https://t.co/Wz3w5Ya9K6 #BiologyLetters#sensoryecology#chemicalecology
New paper today in @royalsociety Biology Letters:
"Morphology of nares associated with stereo-olfaction in baleen whales". We argue that zooplanktivirous mysticetes may use scent to locate food, possibly putting them at increased risk of plastic ingestion

@bluewhalenews @GoldbogenLab This is a direct result of body size and filtration capacity. BWs stop swimming and sink while filtering. HBs have a much shorter filtration time. Minke whales can basically filter very quickly while swimming! (Some variation in lunge strategy, too)
I'm looking at the Moultrie 42i trailcams as a low-cost entry point for joining #SnapshotUSA . Does anyone have any experience with using these cameras for this project? Are they decent or stay away?
