“Greatness” is not a word I’d ever use to describe a slave owner.

But it’s easy to have these cold, totally theoretical conversations when the slaves in question were not your ancestors.

It’s easy to talk this way when the impacts of chattel slavery, a failed Reconstruction, Jim Crow, redlining & convict leasing don’t manifest in your actual life because you’re Kenyan/white rather than #ADOS.

American Descendants of Slavery know what we lost when our family was ran off farms. When our ancestors had their labor stolen. We listen to elders speak on how the KKK burned crosses in their yards. And we listen as inheritors of that legacy of plunder—that began with slavery—not just as analytical bystanders or disinterested spectators.

Lineage really does matter.

Rick: Oh my god, Morty! Capitalism doesn't work if everyone wins. It needs poverty to function. Someone has to take the low-paying jobs so the profits keep flowing upward. If everyone had real financial security, no one would take those positions and the system would collapse.

Morty: But Rick, that's just how the market works. Some people earn more because they provide more value.

Rick: Tell that to the kid assembling your iPhone overseas for pennies while some CEO makes millions off it. Capitalism doesn't reward work, it rewards ownership. You don't climb the ladder by working hard, you climb it by owning the ladder. The workers collectively produce infinitely more value than some shareholder living in the Bahamas.

Morty: Okay, but isn't it about freedom People can still move up if they make good choices. Look at people who came from nothing and became successful, like entrepreneurs or celebrities.

Rick: Those are exceptions, idiot. That's why they're on TV. For every one person who makes it out, millions stay stuck because they never had the same luck, connections, or safety nets. The system needs those stories so people believe it's fair.

But the older I get, the more I realize how much I have in common with both my rowdy parents.

Actor Oliver Reed died while filming Gladiator in Malta after challenging Royal Navy sailors to a drinking contest.

He consumed 3 bottles of Captain Morgan’s Jamaica rum, 8 bottles of German beer, and numerous cognacs, then still managed to beat several sailors in arm-wrestling.

Moments later, he collapsed in the pub and passed away on the way to the hospital. He died like a true gladiator.

NEW: Teen brothers have been captured after allegedly shooting a sheriff during a traffic stop and then leading police on a manhunt.

Covington County Deputy Yates Rodney was performing a traffic stop near a grocery store in Mount Olive, Mississippi.

Cortavious Lawayne Hobbs, 18, and Cortavion Dewayne Hobbs, 19, allegedly tried to drive off before firing 10 to 12 shots at Yates, according to an employee of the grocery store.

The Hobbs brothers then led police on a car chase before escaping and causing a manhunt.

Police eventually found them around 1 AM, hiding under a home in Covington County, and they were apprehended without further incident, but were armed.

The bullet hit Yates above his vest and beneath his arm, possibly hitting his spine, causing life-threatening injuries.

Yates was transported to Forrest General Hospital, where he was last reported to be in stable condition, but the Sheriff's department asked, "Please keep Deputy Rodney and his family in your prayers."

Cortavios and Cortavion are also brothers with Cordarius Hobbs, who is currently being held in the Rankin County Jail on capital murder charges.

As if this story couldn't get and wilder:

-David Rush allegedly built a sham "special access program," the blackest box in U.S. intelligence, so secret even top-clearance officials couldn't look inside without authorization

-The fake program posed as "continuity of government" work, the doomsday planning that keeps Washington running after a nuclear war

-He allegedly read in two colleagues as unwitting accomplices and used a made-up government contract to funnel millions, persuading a defense contractor to buy huge amounts of gold

-The FBI raid on his home seized 303 gold bars worth roughly $40 million, $2 million in cash, and 35 luxury watches

-Investigators say he lied about his college degrees, faked being a Navy pilot, and still sailed through the CIA's notoriously brutal vetting

-A judge ordered him held as a flight risk, and several CIA officials are now on leave as the probe widens

The scheme worked because of the system, not in spite of it.

The secrecy walls built to hide operations from China and Russia hid the fraud from the CIA itself.

A man with a fake résumé ran a fake doomsday program inside the most paranoid institution in America, and for years nobody noticed...

The DNC autopsy found that Trump’s trans ad was very effective against Kamala Harris.
