I moved to the Dominican Republic in 2017 and immediately noticed the major problem of trash. Every empty lot of my neighborhood in Bávaro is used as a dumping ground by construction builders, restaurants and some hotels.
For the past two years, man made illegal fires have been set to burn trash or “clear” land for millions in construction.
The Dominican Republic broke records last year for the most tourists visiting the island in its history. Tourism is one of the highest forms of generated income for the entire country. But if nothing is done in PUNTA CANA, the center of tourism for the entire Caribbean then that will fail.
Every morning we wake up to clouds of smoke entering the homes of families. Some have severe asthma and respiratory problems. Some have been in and out of the hospital due to this smoke. Will it take a person to die for local authorities to care? Our firefighters are getting sick and forms are going around to ask for local citizens to volunteer.
After calls to 911 and being told “it’s a national problem, we can’t help” and the local authorities passing the buck, the residents are tired.
The residents of Punta Cana-Bavaro are calling for help from environmental organizations for this health crisis and our tourism ambassadors because the government has failed us.
The Dominican Republic is one of the most beautiful places on Earth and unfortunately the lack of local government oversight is the cause of its literal burning to the ground.
Please share to help us get our cause off the ground.
